The 8th annual Movies in Will’s Backyard kicks off with “The Story of Will Rogers” (1952), starring Will Rogers, Jr. and Jane Wyman, directed by Michael Curtiz, on Friday, August 9 at Will Rogers State Historic Park.
Guests are invited to bring a blanket, picnic and friends and relax on the lawn at Will’s house for an evening of free film fun. The Technicolor feel-good film follows the real-life adventures of Will Rogers as portrayed by his son Will Rogers, Jr.
Pre-festivities begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the movie at sundown. Guests may tour Will’s house free of charge and stop in at the Visitor’s Center to find a ranch souvenir, including a Will Rogers State Historic Park picnic blanket.
Free popcorn and snacks are also included. Parking is $6 after 6 p.m.
The event is produced by the Will Rogers Ranch Foundation in partnership with California State Parks, and is supported by the Pacific Palisades Historical Society and the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation.
The weekend of events culminates with the Union Bank Dog Iron Polo Cup and Champagne Brunch, set for Sunday, August 11.
Champagne and the opening match begin at 11 a.m., followed at noon by brunch and the feature match. At 1 p.m., The Veuve Clicquot Champagne Divot Stomp ensues. The Dog Iron Polo Cup awards presentation takes place at 2:30 p.m.
