It was just like old times when tennis greats John McEnroe and Michael Chang stepped on the court for the feature match at Sunday evening’s second annual Riviera Tennis Classic.
They met five times on the ATP Tour from 1988-91 and the Hall-of-Famers delighted an enthusiastic crowd at Riviera’s upper courts, Chang prevailing in a tiebreaker. McEnroe paired with American teen Amanda Anisimova against Chang and rising WTA star Naomi Osaka for a spirited doubles clash. Before that, Anisimova and Osaka started their own rivalry, meeting for the first time and Anisimova won a tiebreaker. Earlier that day, Russian Maria Sharapova, who retired from the game last month, joined them all in a Citi-Taste of Tennis cook-off. The charity event raised $20,000 for Heal the Bay and included a VIP reception and on-court clinics and live ball with the pros before the exhibition matches.
