For many years, Marina Aquatic Center has fostered the rowing careers of countless Palisadians—and that trend is continuing this spring.
Besides being the boathouse for the UCLA Women’s Crew Team, MAC has a successful Junior Rowing program for high school students and 8th-graders, led by Coach Zohar Abramovitz.
On the weekend of May 5-7, the US Rowing Southwest Youth Regionals Championship regatta took place at Lake Natoma near Sacramento. The event is the season-culminating competition for all 40+ clubs and schools from California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.
MAC’s Womens Under-16 Quad with Coxswain took first place and its Womens Under-17 Quad earned second in an extremely close race. Both boats will be competing in the Nationals Regatta in Sarasota, Florida. Representing the club are three local residents:
Bella Tyson Montgomery (daughter of Eve Montgomery and Bruce Tyson) in the U16 boat; and Sky Shannon (daughter of Kristine and Steve Shannon) and Mia Mozenter (daughter of Tammy and Rick Mozenter) in the U17 boat. All three girls started rowing in the 2021-22 school year.

Tyson Montgomery lives in the Alphabet Streets and is currently a freshman at Geffen Academy. She went to Methodist preschool and Franklin Elementary. Shannon resides in the Huntington, is a sophomore at Girls Academic Leadership Academy and previously attended Palisades Montessori Center, Palisades Elementary and GALA. Mozenter lives in the Via Bluffs, went to Kehillat Israel, Village School, Paul Revere Middle School and is a sophomore at Palisades High.
The girls have been winning and medaling all season, including at the San Diego Crew Classic (March 21-April 2), which draws a mix of crews from across the country in all levels, even college. Last year, the girls were part of an Under-16 “Eight” (eight rowers) that went to Nationals, placing 10th in their event.
