If you’re like me, a hotel is not the first place that comes to mind when looking for a local restaurant. On Sunset at the Luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel opened my eyes to the possibility of a great dining experience a hotel restaurant.
Although On Sunset is located near the busy 405 Freeway, the landscaping and layout of the property make it feel more like a retreat than a busy urban area. After turning onto the property, drive a few hundred feet to the entrance of the hotel and let the valet know you’re eating at the restaurant. While dining at On Sunset, valet parking is complimentary for two hours.
The hotel was hosting a business conference the night I was there, so many of the guests were wearing suits. The restaurant does not have a dress code, but most of the guests wear business casual to more formal dress.
The hotel lobby was busy, but the restaurant area was quiet. It’s an ideal spot for a business meeting or date if you want to have a nice conversation without fighting the noise.
You can eat inside or outdoors. The elegant patio is covered by a translucent canopy that offers some protection from the elements while still allowing you to enjoy the sunlight.
The menu is not extensive, but it includes a nice selection of salads and seafood dishes and a few other staples of Californian cuisine. The server started us off with bread, and I ordered the filet mignon. The meat was deliciously tender and juicy with a hint of seasoning. After the main course, I sampled a chocolate fudge cake. The cake was excellent but incredibly rich, so you may want to share. There are lighter options as well.
During dinner, I learned Chef Olivier Rouselle designed the selections. He was raised in Paris, France, and those culinary roots clearly influence the menu and style of the restaurant. Rouselle also focuses on using local and sustainable ingredients, so the menu changes with the seasons.
One of the highlights at On Sunset I hope to come back for is the Jazz Brunch with a buffet and live music on Sunday.
