Laura Dave’s novel “The Last Thing He Told Me” has been adapted into a thriller miniseries, starring Palisadian Jennifer Garner, which made its global debut on Friday, April 14, on Apple TV+, and dropped its season finale on Friday, May 19—making all episodes available for streaming.
The show was created and adapted by Dave and her husband, Josh Singer—an Academy Award-winning screenwriter—and marks the first collaboration between the couple.
Based on Dave’s 2021 New York Times bestselling novel, and produced by former Palisadian Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine media company, “The Last Thing He Told Me” follows Hannah Hall (Garner) who “must forge a relationship” with her 16-year-old stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) to uncover why her husband, Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), mysteriously disappeared.
“As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered … [she] quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was,” according to a synopsis of the novel. “And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.
“Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated.”
In an interview with CBS News, Garner revealed that she “fell in love with the role” of Hannah while reading the book with her children.
“We just devoured it, there’s no other way to say it,” she said. “Bedtime went out the window. We stayed up so late every night. Sometimes it was me saying, ‘I’m so sorry, we have to keep going. It’s a cliffhanger, I have to see what happens. I’m sorry, I know you have school tomorrow. You’re going to be tired … ’”
Garner also shared that this prompted her to write letters to the producers, asking to play the titular role.
When asked if a sequel is in the works, Dave revealed that she had already begun writing.
According to Apple TV+, an all-female lineup directed the series, featuring Olivia Newman—who directed the pilot episode—followed by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Daisy Von Scherler Mayer and Lila Neugebauer.
With “breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists and evocative family drama,” and a rating of TV-MA, all seven episodes of “The Last Thing He Told Me” are available for streaming, exclusively on Apple TV+.
