The Palisades Symphony will perform a free concert of music by Russian composers at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, at Mercer Hall on the Palisades High School campus. The evening will feature the ‘Capriccio Italien’ by Tchaikovsky, the ‘Polovetsian Dances’ by Alexander Borodin and Symphony No. 11, ‘The Year of 1905,’ by Dimitri Shostakovich. Music Director Joel Lish will conduct. The Tchaikovsky work was inspired by a trip to Rome and recalls Italian folk music and street songs. The ‘Polovetsian Dances,’ from Borodin’s opera ‘Prince Igor’ about the 12th-century royal, are among his most well-known work. The Shostakovich tells the story of Bloody Sunday, when Czarist troops massacred peasants before the Imperial Palace, ultimately igniting the Russian Revolution. Palisades Symphony is a volunteer community orchestra and new musicians are welcome. Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights. On December 4, the symphony will join forces with the Brentwood Palisades Chorale and soloists for a performance of Puccini’s ‘Messa Di Gloria.’ Singers who would like to join the chorale are encouraged to do it now, in order to have enough time to learn the music. Tenors are especially needed. The chorale rehearses on Monday night. For information on joining either group, contact Eva Holberg at (310) 454-8040.
