After the second set of Monday’s Western League showdown against archrival Venice, Palisades High girls volleyball coach uttered “get ready for a roller coaster.”
It was indeed a wild ride, but in the end the Dolphins escaped with a 16-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 15-11 victory to remain undefeated in the Western League.
The fifth set went back and forth until Palisades took an 11-10 lead and closed it out behind the serving of sophomore setter Keely McMahon.
Palisades swept the host Gondos in the teams’ first league meeting, but Venice raised its game in the rematch.
Palisades finished 3-4 against some of the top teams in the state last weekend in the California Challenge at Torrey Pines.
“The tournament was like a feather in our cap,” Coach Carlos Gray said. “We took it on the chin a few times, but we got better each match. Unfortunately, we couldn’t carry that play over to today.”
