The Palisades High track and field teams competed in their first big invitational meet Friday and Saturday at the Redondo Nike Track Festival and the Dolphins looked strong, especially in distance events.
Lucas Schriver placed fifth in the boys frosh/soph 3200 meters in 9:58.74 and 17th in the 1600-meter race in 4:45.02 (fellow sophomore Pablo Sandoval was 21st in 4:46.60), the boys frosh/soph 800 sprint medley relay won in 1:41.75, the frosh/soph 4×800 relay was second in 8:31.78, the varsity 800 sprint medley relay came in fifth in 1:37.91 and junior Kenny Davis placed 10th in the varsity 300 hurdles in 42.46 seconds. The varsity 4×100 relay was 14th in 44.58.
For the girls, reigning City Section 800 meter champion Brittany Darrow was ninth in the varsity girls race at Redondo in 2:21.35, junior Sarah Bentley was 20th in 2:25.12 and Skylar Smith clocked 2:26.97. Senior Lilyan Garside was 20th in the varsity 400-meter dash (1:00.28).
Junior Erica Bagby was 10th in the varsity pole vault, first clearing 10-6.00 and then 11 feet, both on her second attempt. In the girls varsity 3200, sophomore Miranda Schriver was eighth in 11:09.12 and Bentley, the two-time City champion, was 16th in 11:18.51. The girls frosh/soph 800 sprint medley relay was seventh in 2:03.96 and the girls varsity 4×100 relay was 16th in 51.45, just edging City rival El Camino Real (51.70). Overall, the varsity boys tied for 33rd, the frosh/soph boys were 16th and the varsity girls were 35th out of 49 schools.
Palisades hosted a dual meet against Taft last Thursday at Stadium by the Sea and several Dolphins set personal bests, like Chase Freeman (12.08) and Steve Price (12.16) in the frosh/soph boys 100 meters and Ricky Holland (25.45 and 57.64) and Hollis Hill (25.86 and 58.11) in the frosh/soph 200 and 400.
Shane Larimer won the varsity 400-meter dash in a personal-record 52.65 seconds, Nickolas Mendes was second in a season-best 53.32 and Kyrick Curl was fourth in a personal-best 54.41. Curl also clocked 11.68 in the varsity 100 meters and 23.87 in the 200. Davis ran a personal-best 41.46 in the varsity 300 hurdles. Garside won the varsity girls 400, Chandler Smith won the varsity 300 hurdles in a personal-best 52.76 and Imani Beckett won the frosh/soph 200 in 29.37 and 400 in 67.08.
