Cheryl Kline Documents Changing Sky

October Skies
October Skies

‘It’s a Beautiful Day,’ 20 paintings by Pacific Palisades artist Cheryl Kline, are on view through the end of October at the Beverly Hills Country Club, 3084 Motor Ave.   The exhibit completes Kline’s 3-1/2 years documenting the coast and the dramatic and colorful ‘operas in the sky’ with her large sky paintings. Some show a drama about to unfold above a distant land, others are calm and serene statements of a gentle dusk.   ’The coastline from Will Rogers Beach and north reminds us of the paradise we all call home,’ says Kline, who was born and raised in Southern California. Her art education includes a B.A. from Woodbury University, the Bruchion School of Realist Art, and the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Her inventive and strikingly realistic paintings have been praised in the L.A. Times, Malibu magazine, and Smithsonian. Her work can also be seen at the LACMA Artist’s Gallery.   In 2007, she opened the Kline Academy of Fine Art, where she and other professional artists teach the tradition of classical painting and drawing.   To preview the show, visit www.cherylkline.com/

Holly Kearl, On Why Cat Calls Have Got to Go

Holly Kearl
Holly Kearl

‘This is a Harassment-Free Zone,’ one sign warns. ‘Curb Your Animal Instincts,’ another orders. Combine postings like these, proposed by women’s rights advocates, with blunt commands”Stop It!”and women around the world can begin to make city streets safer, writes Holly Kearl in her new book, ‘Stop Street Harassment: Making Public Places Safe and Welcoming for Women’ (Praeger, $44). Kearl will talk about women’s experiences getting hassled and worse in public places, and suggest ways to defend themselves on Wednesday, October 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Village Books, 1049 Swarthmore Ave. She hardly knew there was such a thing as street harassment when she was a teenager growing up in Pacific Palisades. As a student at Paul Revere Middle School, Kearl won first prize for her original short story in the PTA’s countywide ‘Reflections’ writing competition in 1996. But later, while she was attending Santa Clara University near San Jose, Kearl scrimmaged past cat calls and whistles nearly every time she went jogging. Conversations with other women who had stories of their own, some of them harrowing, led her to write a master’s thesis on harassment at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She now works with AAUW, a national women’s equity organization based in Washington, D.C. where she addresses issues of equal rights for women and girls. ‘Stop Street Harassment’ is her first book. In surveys and interviews she conducted, Kearl found that the majority of women she polled had been followed by a stranger at least once. Some said they changed the route they took to work, or even changed jobs, hoping to avoid taunts and insults. ‘Street harassment limits women’s access to public places,’ Kearl told the Palisadian-Post. Not all men sympathize with the problem. ‘A lot of men told me they whistle at a woman as a compliment. It doesn’t go any further,’ Kearl said. ‘Some women are flattered, but many of them worry. ‘Is he dangerous? Am I alone? Can I get away?’ ” In her book, Kearl includes tactics women have used to steer clear of hassles on the street (avoid eye contact, for one). She also points out some of the unexpected things that activists have proposed to raise awareness, such as warning signs posted on city streets. But she did not write her book for women, only. ‘I’m trying to reach the good guys,’ Kearl said. ‘I hope they will help to educate the others.’

McCartney Band Member and PaliHi Grad Launches New CD

Former Palisadian Brian Ray, with his dog Charlie, has been a guitarist with Paul McCartney
Former Palisadian Brian Ray, with his dog Charlie, has been a guitarist with Paul McCartney

Brian Ray, a top contemporary guitarist and a member of Paul McCartney’s band, celebrates’the release’of his new solo CD ‘This Way Up’ tomorrow night, October 8, at 8 p.m. at the Roxy Theater in West Hollywood. This is the follow-up to Ray’s ‘Mondo Magneto’ (2006), also on his label, Whooray Records.   ’It’s going to be an exciting night with special guests, give-a-ways, a raffle, merchandise, and live video feed,’ says Ray, who spent his childhood in Pacific Palisades, graduating from PaliHi in 1973. All proceeds from ticket sales and raffles benefit MusiCares. Tickets are available at the box office (310) 278-9457.   Ray, 55, moved to the Palisades with his family in 1966, but his musical future was already set. ‘When I was 3, my sister [who was 15 years older] Jean, would play 45s of various artists such as Elvis, Little Richard and the Everly Brothers,’ Ray says. ‘I remember wanting to be Elvis because of the reaction he got from other people.’ Ray says that Jean, who was half of the ’60’s duo Jim & Jean, ‘was probably the most important and influential person in my life.’   Ray began playing guitar at 9 and by 13 he was writing music. At 15, Jean invited him to play at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. Later, in the ’70s, he played with his sister Catherine’s (PaliHi ’70) band called The Group With No Name. Gene Simmons (bassist for Kiss) produced the demos that would get the band signed with Casablanca.   Ray’s association with the Troubadour turned out to be a lucky one, leading him in a new direction.   It began in the most unlikely way. As one-fifth of Bobby Pickett and the Crypt Kicker Five, Ray found himself playing the ‘Monster Mash’ at a fundraising benefit hosted by Phil Kaufman (road manager for Gram Parsons), who took Brian in and would soon introduce him to Etta James at a rehearsal at the Troubadour. Etta was on the brink of a comeback, ‘so full of fire and intensity,’ Ray says. That brief introduction would, only months later, lead to a 14-year career as Etta’s musical director and guitarist.   Throughout the 1980s, Ray concentrated on his writing and collaborated with musicians such as Peter Frampton and Rita Coolidge, as well as his songwriting partner for 13 years, Steve LeGassick.   His collaboration with LeGassick catapulted his songwriting to the world stage in 1987 with the Smokey Robinson award-winning hit, ‘One Heartbeat.’   LeGassick and Ray co-wrote a song which they intended to submit to Robinson. Even after being told, ‘thanks, but no thanks,’ they decided to send it anyhow. That song ‘One Heartbeat’ became the title track on Robinson’s next album. It is now nearing three million airplays.   Previous to working with McCartney, Ray had been on tour in France with artists Mylene Farmer and Johnny Hallyday. Abe Laboriel Jr., a drummer who had worked with Ray, mentioned that McCartney was looking for a guitarist who could easily switch between bass guitar and guitar. After meeting with McCartney’s producer for ‘Driving Rain,’ Ray joined McCartney for the halftime concert at the NFL’s Super Bowl in 2002.   Ray flew down to New Orleans to play one song, ‘Freedom,’ with Paul’s band. At the end of the concert, Brian thanked Paul and the band for the opportunity, thinking that was it. However, later that evening, Paul gave Brian a hug, and welcomed him to the band, telling him to ‘Stick with Abe [Laboriel, drums] and Rusty [Anderson, lead guitar] and they’ll show you the ropes.’ With that, Brian was in. He has been a member of Paul McCartney’s band’ever since.   As Ray continues to travel with McCartney, he manages to squeeze in other projects. One of his guitar instrumentals, a tribute to Les Paul at the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami, has been nominated for consideration for the Grammy’s in the ‘best rock instrumental’ category.   ’I feel blessed to live and work, truly following my passion,’ says Ray, who lives in Santa Monica.

Applause for ‘Secretariat’

Picking my favorite sports moment is not easy, but one of the first visions that pops into my head is that of a great athlete in his prime dominating the competition like no one before or since. No, I’m not talking about Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Jim Brown, Wayne Gretzky or Muhammad Ali. I’m not even talking about a human being. I’m talking about a horse. His owners called him “Big Red,” fans knew him as Secretariat, and back in the spring of 1973 he captivated the entire country when he became the first thoroughbred in 25 years to win the Triple Crown. Now, “Big Red” is hitting the big screen in Walt Disney Production’s much-anticipated “Secretariat: The Impossible True Story,” which bursts from the gate into theaters nationwide on Friday. The movie is about the horse’s owner, Penny Chenery Tweedy (portrayed brilliantly by Diane Lane), who took the reins of the family’s Virginia farm from her ailing father in 1968 and won Secretariat by virtue of losing a coin flip to wealthy horse breeder Ogden Phipps (James Cromwell). John Malkovich delivers as trainer Lucien Laurin, who came out of retirement to work at Meadow Stable and guide the careers of first Riva Ridge (Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner in 1972), then Secretariat. When I heard that a movie was being made about my favorite racehorse, my initial excitement gradually turned to skepticism. I mean, how could they ever find a horse as good looking and charismatic as the real “Big Red?” Sports films are hit and miss, especially those trying to retell actual events. Nevertheless, this is a project I’d waited decades for, so I arranged to see an advance viewing and I was not disappointed. Like the 2003 Universal release “Seabiscuit,” based on the book by Laura Hillenbrand, the script for “Secretariat” is an adaptation of “Secretariat: The Making of a Champion,” first published in 1975 by award-winning sportswriter Bill Nack, who makes a cameo appearance in the movie (as does Penny Chenery). The screen version, however, leaves out too many key details and gives the false impression that Secretariat was an underdog when in truth he was the favorite in every race he ran, even for the Kentucky Derby two weeks after his shocking loss in the Wood Memorial. Despite its flaws, however, the movie succeeds on an emotional level and the race sequences capture the power and grace of an equine athlete who, when in peak form, was breathtaking to watch and unequaled in speed and stamina. In the week leading up to the Belmont Stakes, where he ran his greatest race (maybe the best performance in the history of the sport), the handsome three-year-old chestnut colt with a star and three white stockings was featured on the covers of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated magazines–a testament to his popularity both on and off the track. Although I am too young to have witnessed any of Secretariat’s triumphs in person, I have watched replays from all of his races over and over. Track announcer Chic Anderson’s dramatic call of the Belmont still gives me goosebumps: “Secretariat is widening now… he is moving like a tremendous machine!” Oh how I wish I could have been in the grandstands on that June day in New York to witness Secretariat winning by 31 lengths and setting a world record time that still stands. Whether or not you are a horse racing fan, don’t be surprised to find yourself cheering for “Secretariat.” Director Randy Wallace puts us in the saddle for a thrilling ride down the home stretch. sports@palipost.com

Dolphins Get Trophy Win

Varsity Beats Granada Hills 10-0 in Charter Bowl

The primary task for the Palisades High varsity football team heading into last Friday night’s homecoming game against Granada Hills was slowing down Jacob Smith. The Highlanders’ speedy tailback had rushed for 171 yards and four touchdowns the week before in a 42-13 rout of Sun Valley Poly. After watching film, Dolphins Coach Perry Jones called Smith “the real deal.” Well, in Charter Bowl V, Palisades’ defense was more deserving of that moniker, never letting Smith bust loose en route to a 10-0 victory–the Dolphins second consecutive shutout and the 72nd in school history. Both teams struggled to move the ball on offense, especially in the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie. Palisades’ junior quarterback Nathan Dodson attempted just three passes all game–completing one to Ben Ingram for 28 yards. The Dolphins (2-2) relied mostly on the legs of senior running back Malcolm Creer, who finished with 127 yards in 14 carries, and Arte’ Miura, who added 64 yards in eight carries and scored the only touchdown in the third quarter to provide all the points the Dolphins would need. Senior kicker Sam Burt tacked on the extra point and padded Palisades’ lead with a 31’yard field goal in the fourth quarter. The home team almost scored another touchdown, but Granada Hills (2-2) recovered a fumble in its end zone for a touchback. Junior outside linebacker Victor Garcia led the defense with nine solo tackles while Elmer Garcia and Hakeem Jawanza each added six solo tackles. The last time the Dolphins posted back-to-back shutouts was in 1992 under Coach Jack Epstein, when they blanked Los Angeles 33-0 and University 40-0. Since the Charter Bowl began in 2006, each team has won every game on its home field. Both of the Dolphins’ wins have been shutouts while two of the Highlanders’ three victories have been by a touchdown–10-3 in the inaugural game and 28-21 last year at Granada Hills’ John Elway Stadium. The teams first met in 1977 (the Highlanders edged Palisades 28-27) and Granada Hills owns a 7-3 advantage all time. Friday night, however, belonged to the Dolphins, who now get to keep the prized bronze Charter Bowl trophy… at least until next year’s game. Palisades’ frosh/soph squad posted its third consecutive shutout and avenged one of its two losses last season. Jack Jordan scored two touchdowns, upping his season total to six. sports@palipost.com Charter Bowl History Year Location/Result 2006 @ Granada Hills 10, Palisades 3 2007 @ Granada Hills 48, Palisades 10 2008 @ Palisades 21, Granada Hills 0 2009 @ Granada Hills 28, Palisades 21 2010 @ Palisades 10, Granada Hills 0

Gymnasts Stay in Rhythm

Canyon School Girls Move to Level 5

Canyon Elementary School gymnast Anna Teitelbaum shows fine form during her floor exercise routine at the Junior Olympics in Portland.

By DEBBIE ALEXANDER Special to the Palisadian-Post Back in training to choreograph new routines, three local rhythmic gymnasts welcome a new season of competition. Sisters Desiree and Madelyn Webb and fellow Canyon Charter Elementary School student Anna Teitelbaum have graduated to Level 5, which incorporates new elements and tricks. All three girls are ranked in the Top 20 in their age groups. Desiree (age 9) is ninth, Madelyn (age 7) is 13th and Anna (age 9) is 16th. Desiree won the state championship with the rope, Madelyn won it in the floor exercise and Anna placed sixth in the ball at the Junior Olympics, where the trio culminated their first competitive seasons on different teams in Portland over Memorial Day weekend. “My goal is to do really well in the meets,” Desiree explained. “I’m more excited because I’m learning harder stuff in my four floor routines.” Added Madelyn: “My workouts are difficult because everything is new, but I’m having fun.” Rhythmic gymnastics is a cousin to traditional gymnastics, now referred to as “artistic.” The style blends manuevers like handsprings with balletic elements such as pirouettes solely on the floor. Props include balls, hoops and ropes. The modern sport originated in the Soviet Union in the 1940s based on European ideas of free exercise. Individual competition began at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, with team events added in 1996. “It’s ballet on steroids,” said the Webb sisters’ mom, Danna, whose daughters’ serious rhythmic involvement couldn’t have come at a better time. Unfortunately, she got diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2009, shortly after Desiree and Madelyn made the rhythmic team at Josephson Academy of Gymnastics in Culver City. “I didn’t want them to see me suffer during my cancer battle,” Danna revealed. “This was my gift because I got to see my kids do gymnastics. We’re also so lucky because my father-in-law Ronnie drove the girls there three days a week during my treatment.” The girls’ coach Larissa Nikita plucked the sisters off JAG’s artistic team. “The coaches were nearly fist fighting over my girls because it’s impossible to be a member of both teams,” Danna said. “We chose rhythmic because there’s less chance of injury and the girls develop more of a dancer’s physique.” Teitelbaum, meanwhile, is looking forward to learning new skills. “I know what gymnastics feels like, but I’m scared of my new routines which makes me nervous,” she said. “I’m now learning how to back catch, where I balance on one leg and bend back to catch my other leg with my arms.” Anna’s mom Ninel admitted her daughter’s dedication has increased. “Anna got serious this year about rhythmic gymnastics,” she said. “I’ve never pushed my children to do any activity. I’ve always supported them with what they choose to do.” As a toddler, Anna tumbled at Broadway Gymnastics and then danced. She trains with Tatiana Itkin at California Rhythms valley location. “I love it,” added Anna, who cartwheels around the house. “I’m always jumping around and don’t want to stop. Gymnastics is hard, but if you say you believe that you can do this, then you can.” Over the summer, the girls didn’t fully go on hiatus. The Webb sisters studied ballet for a month in Miami, while Anna spent three weeks at a gymnastics camp in Russia. As Level 5 gymnasts, all three are fully dedicated to their sport with amped up training schedules. The Webb sisters now work out at JAG four days a week, one of which is ballet. Anna goes to California Rhythms five days a week and does her homework in the car. The girls are friends at school, but don’t mingle at meets because they stick with their respective teams. This year’s competitions get underway in January in Las Vegas, followed by a meet in Vancouver and the Junior Olympics at Disney World in Orlando. “It’s a lot less intimidating because we know what to expect,” Danna Webb said. “Besides, Desiree and Madelyn have learned such valuable life lessons from gymnastics’ like thinking on their feet. And if a mistake happens, well then keep on going.” Teitelbaum relishes the time she spends with her mom prepping and traveling to competitions. “She’s making friends, having fun and wearing sparkly leotards,” Ninel Teitelbaum observed. “We’re not planning to join an Olympic team anytime soon.” The 2020 Summer Games are not far away. If they don’t compete there, perhaps these talented young gymnasts should consider Cirque du Soliel’s famed acrobat school in Montreal.

The Palisades High boys’ cross country team continues to make strides and will head into this afternoon’s first Western League meet with momentum. The Dolphins’ varsity team had 114 points and took fourth in the Weisenburger Invitational at Elysian Park last Saturday, finishing behind only Taft (85), Monroe (107) and Birmingham (112). Junior and team captain Grant Stromberg won the race in 15:41 (tying the course record), followed by sophomore Drake Johnston (eighth in 16:06), junior Matt Hammer (13th in 16:18), Danny Escalante (35th in 17:22), Daniel Hernandez (18:07) and Nick Wong (18:09). The boys’ junior varsity also finished fourth, led by junior Austin Gelber (third place in 18:03) and senior Paulis Ramos (15th in 18:53) while the frosh/soph squad was led by Jack Palladino (13th in 18:09), Liam Palladino (14th in 18:15) and Jonathan Tewedrous (15th in 18:17). Sophomore Jacklyn Bamburger won the girls’ varsity race in 19:02. sports@palipost.com
