Twenty-nine families and their daughters will be honored for their service to the Southern California community and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles at the Las Madrinas Ball, which is slated to take place December 21, including several Palisadians: Phebe Hancock, Coco Kennedy, Lauren Seidel, Jessica Silletti, Riley Sullivan and Riley Vincent, as well as former Palisadian Caroline Weller.
“The young women, their mothers and their grandmothers were guests of honor at a tea given by Las Madrinas at the home of Katie Shea High on June 7,” according to a press release. “The President of Las Madrinas Kathryne Halverson Garland formally welcomed the families, thanked them for their contributions and commitment to the Southern California community, and articulated gratitude for the chance to educate this year’s group of young women with philanthropic literacy, awareness and purpose.”

Los Angeles-based nonprofit Ready to Succeed—which has Palisadian board members—recently hosted its annual “Camp Ready” summer camp, marking the start of its internship and scholarship program for new students.
The nonprofit, launched in 2016, works to provide resources and support college-going foster youth and low-income first-generation college students.
Camp Ready attendees heard from surprise guest speaker Congressmember Ted Lieu, who announced the news that each student would receive a $5,000 scholarship, according to information in a press release.
“With support from Lieu, the organization Ready to Succeed was included in the federal budget for the first time ever, receiving a $1 million grant in the Omnibus Bill passed by Congress,” the press release continued. “The largest chunk of the grant will be allocated to the $5,000 scholarship for each RTS scholar to head into the school year without worrying about basic needs.”

Paliskates teamed up with Sofar Sounds to host a concert in the store on Saturday, June 17, which featured Chris Davis, Omoghéné and JoethePoet. Sofar Sounds aims to bring “artists and audiences together to create intimate, live performances in unique, secret spaces,” according to its Instagram bio.
