After a lengthy three-year wait, fans of the dark HBO comedy “Barry” can rejoice: The first episode of season three—featuring Marquez Knolls resident Bill Hader—premiered on April 24.
The show, which first aired in March 2018, follows the story of Barry Berkman (Hader), a Marine-turned-low-stakes-hitman who is tired of the job. After being called to Los Angeles for a job, Barry ends up staying, joining an acting class he followed his target into. Though his boss, Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root), is reluctant to let him go.
“He wants to start a new life as an actor, but his criminal past won’t let him walk away,” according to a synopsis by HBO. “Can he find a way to balance both worlds?”
“Barry,” which has amassed 30 Emmy Award nominations, was created by Hader and Alec Berg. Hader has won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series twice, with Henry Winkler taking home the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role of acting coach Gene Cousineau in the first season.
Other stars of the show include Sarah Goldberg as Sally Reed (Barry’s love interest) and Anthony Carrigan as NoHo Hank. It is executive produced by Berg, Hader and Aida Rodgers.
Each season has received favorable reviews with the first two seasons sitting at 98% and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Season three is currently rated 100%.
“Bill Hader and company can take a well-deserved bow,” according to the site’s Critics Consensus. “‘Barry’ makes its belated return to the screen without missing a step, retaining its edge as one of television’s funniest and most unsettling offerings.”
The eight-episode third season will include a new episode each Sunday night at 10 p.m., ending with a season finale set to air June 12. The show is rated TV-MA.
