
The Los Angeles Master Chorale, under the baton of Associate Conductor Lesley Leighton, performs at Pepperdine University’s Smothers Theatre as part of “The Ascending Voice III: An International Symposium of Sacred A Cappella Music” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9.
The chorale’s 32 singers will perform “Ave Maria” (Gregorian chant); “Ave Maria Guarani” by Morricone; “O Magnum Mysterium” by Victoria; “O Magnum Mysterium” by Lauridsen; “My Lord, What a Mornin’” by Burleigh; “The Battle of Jericho” by Hogan; “Os justi meditabitur sapientiam” by Bruckner; “The Pilgrim’s Hymn” by Paulus; “Unclouded Day” by Kirchner; “I Was Glad” by Parry; “Always Singing” by Warland; “Four Motets” by Copland; “Jubilant Song” by Dello Joio; “Sure on This Shining Night” by Lauridsen; and “For My Father” by McLaren.
The “Ascending Voice III” symposium, devoted exclusively to a cappella music in Christian worship, will continue on May 10 and 11.
In addition to lectures and workshop presentations by leading authorities on this rich style of worship, the daily lineup includes performances by top collegiate choral groups and a May 11 concert by the Grammy-nominated ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock.
