Palisadian artist Calliope Babu-Khan is utilizing her Greek roots for her latest work, which will be on display from 5 to 7 p.m. on June 24 at the Greek Consul’s residence in Hancock Park. Born in Athens, Babu-Khan has come to realize deep feelings for the Hellenic spirit and the wealth of artistic perfection and achievements of Ancient Greece. ’In my large watercolor, ‘Greece Salutes the 200 Year Anniversary of the United States,’ I have depicted the gods and goddesses of the heavenly Olympian pantheon, including Aphrodite, Apollo, Athena and Poseidon,’ Babu-Khan says. She has also painted some fragments of red-figure ancient vases into which she has incorporated classical ancient Greek-language sayings. ’The basic principles of Greek art, with its love of the human body, not only of man but also his gods, who have power and beauty, have inspired me,’ she says. In Babu-Khan’s ‘Drawing Los Angeles and Athens Together,’ the artist shows the Olympic flame that arrived in Los Angeles for the 1984 Games. It is a continuous line drawing which symbolizes the continuation of the culture through the centuries from Ancient Greece to the present. In another series, ‘Glimpses of My Odyssey,’ Babu-Khan represents her own journey. For information on her work, call (310) 454-4151. To RSVP (by June 20), call (310) 826-5555, ext. 103.
