In mid-June, multiple litters of very young and very sick kittens were found in a crawlspace beneath a Pacific Palisades home, along with their eight wild mama cats. Hoping to see that the kittens would get the best possible care, the homeowner reached out to Voice for the Animals Foundation at the Pacific Palisades Farmers Market and set the rescue in motion.
Over the course of three days, VFTA volunteer Theresa Uhrig pulled a total of 24 kittens from beneath the home. The organization’s executive director Melya Kaplan said the kittens were only a few weeks old and extremely malnourished.

The mother cats were fixed, brought up to date on their shots and micro-chipped. The kittens have been sterilized and vaccinated and VFTA is currently fundraising to cover the costs of medical care, food and housing for the kittens.
“Our vet bills are over $7,000,” Kaplan told the Post.
VFTA is asking Palisadians to donate to help cover the costs. Ady Gil of Ady Gil World Conservation is matching donations dollar-for-dollar. Kaplan describes the kittens as “very social and sweet” and hopes people will find it within their hearts to foster or adopt.
One of the lucky kittens named Spacey (after Kevin Spacey) has found a home at the apartment of Alex Brodsky, Multimedia Specialist for VFTA, who is using the Foster-to-Adopt program and the two have quickly formed a bond.
“He is such a sweetie,” Brodsky said.
For a fee of $125, Palisadians can adopt a kitten of their own. To donate, foster or adopt, go to vftafoundation.org or call (310) 392-5153.
