Local children and teens are invited to participate in the annual summer creative writing contest sponsored by the Pacific Palisades Library Association.
This year’s contest theme, “Food . . .Writing Is Delicious, too!” complements the library’s summer reading club theme, “Reading Is So Delicious.”
Entries must include at least one reference to food, and could include characters eating, a cooking experience or a family holiday gathering. All food-related ideas are welcome.
All entries must be submitted to a librarian and logged in at the Palisades Branch Library information desk before September 4.
Entries may take any literary form, and age categories include: Scribblers (entering grades 1 and 2), Jotters (grades 3 and 4), Scrawlers (grades 5 and 6), Scribes (grades 7 and 8) and Authors (high school).
Contestants are limited to one entry, which must not exceed three pages (double spaced), typed in size 12 font. Entries that were submitted to schools or have won prizes in other contests are not eligible.
Typed entries are preferred, but handwritten entries by younger contestants are acceptable. Sounded-out but misspelled words are acceptable for younger entrants, and entries where an adult has clearly corrected all spelling or grammar (or has actually written the entry) will be automatically disqualified.
Contestants may work in small groups, but only one prize will be awarded if the entry wins.
Awards will be given out in the fall at the library. Prizes will be Diesel Book store gift certificates, and include $100 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third—in each category. All contestants will receive certificates of participation.
Details and entries forms are available online at friendsofpalilibrary.org and at the library. Contact: (310) 459-2754.
