‘Hot Prowl’
You dedicated a large part of your front page to the “Hot Prowl” robbery. From personal experience, I learned that the LAPD uses the term “Hot Prowl” because it sounds less scary than HOME INVASION, which it was. I know, it happened on our street last year. When the bad folks break into your home to steal, and you’re home, it’s HOME INVASION.
Cinque Terre
While dining at Cinque Terre, I watched a homeless man order take out and when the food was brought out to him he did not have enough money to pay. Cinque Terre owner asked “What can you pay?” and then cheerfully gave him the food for a tiny fraction of the price. It warmed my heart and made my night. Cinque Terre really is part of the community.
Green Tip
The Green Tip Column suggestion to blend avocado skins and seeds and add to garden soil should be undertaken with care. All parts of the avocado contain a toxin called persin. It is toxic to rabbits, Guinea pigs, birds (especially pet birds), horses, goats, sheep, and other domestic and wild animals. Dogs and cats are somewhat more tolerant but can also be adversely affected.
Editor’s note: A representative from Resilient Palisades shared the following response: Thank you for alerting us to the potential harm of using avocado skins around the garden! Resilient Palisades strives to provide fully researched green tips and we always appreciate our community’s feedback, including corrections and additions.
COVID
Polls show that at least 20% of the US population will not be vaccinated and probably a higher percentage worldwide. The choice for the rest of us in the coming year will be to either huddle in our homes and wear a mask when going out for the rest of our lives, or return to (not the infamous new) normal and move ahead with life as mankind has done through the ages. I choose the latter.
‘Normal Times’
It’s a bit jarring to see how quickly things are turning back around to what we consider normal. Traffic alone proves it, I can’t say I missed that part of “normal times.”
Vaccine
I got my first dose of the vaccine and am feeling all kinds of grateful. I was moved to tears as they did it. I hope all of my neighbors, friends and family members are able to book their appointments soon.
Vaccine II
I am so grateful for and appreciative of the neighbors I’ve seen lend their time to help others schedule a vaccine appointment. It can be a real chore hunting one down but some neighbors understand that and still choose to help those who may not be as tech-savvy or patient. It’s so nice to know we can count on our neighbors.
