Calvary Christian School third graders joined forces with local elders on May 22 for a community service project, organized by the Palisades-Malibu YMCA’s Center for Social Responsibility.
Representing a wide range of generations at the American Legion Hall on La Cruz, the participants wrote letters and made cheerful cards to send to U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan. They got to know each other while eating cookies and chatting at the crafts table.
American Legion member Bill Branch said of his time talking with Abbie O’Connor and Kyley McClung, “I remembered things from my childhood that I had forgotten. I was so impressed by the children. It was so nice to have them take an interest in me.”
Abbie responded, “I learned about Bill that he likes to volunteer and he likes a lot of the things I like. I learned we have a lot of things in common.”
The students also took turns asking prepared questions of the seniors in attendance, and entertained them by singing songs and reciting poetry.
Said YMCA Executive Director Carol Pfannkuche, who invited members from the Legion, the Legion Auxiliary, the Optimist Club, Rotary and the Y: “It was heart-warming to watch the event guests interact and form new friendships.
