World Peace Rejoins Lakers

Metta World Peace is back in purple and gold.
Last Thursday the Palisades High assistant girls basketball coach signed a one-year, nonguaranteed contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, returning to the franchise he last played for in 2013.
The 35-year-old veteran forward contributed to the Lakers’ last NBA title in 2010. He played for the New York Knicks in 2013-14 before signing with the Sichuan Blue Whales in China last August, averaging 19 points six rebounds and two steals in 15 games.
In March, he signed with Pallacanestro Cantù of Italy for the remainder of the Lega Basket Serie A season.
World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest) helped guide the Lady Dolphins to the City Section Open Division title in March. His sons Ron III and Jeron play on the varsity boys team and his daughter Sadie played on the JV girls team as a freshman five years ago.
Pali High girls head coach Torino Johnson, who was named City Coach of the year, couldn’t be happier for his friend.
“I’m so excited for him and proud of him… he’s been so close to being back in the league,” Johnson said. “We’re going to get another title with him.”
Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak said World Peace will serve as a mentor to the younger players, particularly forward Julius Randle.
