Junior Lifeguard programs representing 12 Southland beaches sent their best to compete in the annual Taplin Relays on Friday at Dockweiler Beach in Playa del Rey and when the sand settled Will Rogers had placed in the top five in all three age divisions.
The local program sent two co-ed teams in each of the three divisions (A, B and C), each team consisting of 18 guards (six runners, six paddlers, six swimmers).
Will Rogers’ first C team (ages 9-11) took fifth, the first B team (ages 12-13) was third and the first A team (ages 14-17) also took third.
Will Rogers also sent two A-level all-girls teams, each consisting of two runners, two paddlers and two swimmers. One of the teams finished second.
The Night Taplin for A-level guards is Saturday at 7 p.m. north of the Hermosa Beach Pier.
