Representing the Will Rogers Junior Lifeguard Program, Nolan Wang, Brent Smith and Sammy Speiser won the swim-run-paddle-run event Saturday night at the Taplin Relays, defeating junior guards from 10 other Southland beaches.

Speiser, who won City championships in water polo and swimming in 2015-16 at Pali High, did the paddling while Smith, who runs cross country and track and also plays soccer for the Dolphins, did the running. Smith won the City frosh/soph 1600- and 3200-meter track titles as a ninth-grader in May. Wang, who handled the swiming portion, graduated from Paul Revere Middle School in the springand will be a freshman at Loyola High this fall.
On Sunday, Speiser swam the two-mile pier-to-pier race from Hermosa Beach to Manhattan Beach in 49 minutes, placing sixth in the 15-19 age category and 39th overall out of 1,500 particpants. He swam with his dad Robert, who finished in one hour, 11 minutes.
