Longtime Palisadian Walter Goldie, known for his sense of humor and warm smile, passed away on September 21, at the age of 91. Born in Walkerville, Canada, on June 25, 1919 to Arthur and Annie Scott-Goldie, he moved at a young age to St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He joined the U.S. Navy in Detroit upon his graduation from high school. During his naval career, Walter served in Guant’namo Bay, Cuba. He also spent time in the South Pacific and was eventually transferred to the USS Yorktown, which was hit during the Battle of Midway and sunk in the Coral Sea. Walter was not injured, though many of his shipmates perished. Walter married Lauriette Turcotte in 1943 and enjoyed 67 wonderful years of marriage. In 1948, the couple moved to Pacific Palisades, where they happily raised their two daughters, Karen and Cindy. Walter was employed in the aerospace industry for over 35 years, retiring from the Rocketdyne division of North American-Rockwell Corporation. His opportunity to work on numerous Apollo projects for the U.S. space program ‘was a wonderful privilege.’ An enthusiastic, involved family man, Walter was also an avid athlete who shared his love of life and sport with family and friends. Always physically fit, he was active athletically well into retirement. He loved swimming or body surfing in the Pacific Ocean, tennis, golf and running at the Palisades High track. He considered the most rewarding times in his life, however, to be those moments spent with his family and friends. Walter is survived by his loving wife, Lauriette; his daughters, Karen Goldie-Fuhr (husband Bill Fuhr) of Dallas, Texas, and Cindy Goldie-Fierro of Manhattan Beach; his grandchildren Lisa Fuhr-Donahue (husband Kent) of McKinney, Texas; Lori Fuhr-Brumley (husband Jonny) of Ft. Worth, Texas; Brent Fierro (New York), Kristin Fierro (Michigan) and Blake Fierro (California); great-grandchildren Jordan Donahue, Jake Donahue, Katie Donahue, Will Brumley, Anna Brittan Brumley and Mariel Brumley; and great-great grandchild Brooks Fierro-Gohl, who is 9 months old. The family wishes to acknowledge the gracious and loving care given to Walter during the last year of his life by Vitas Hospice Services. A mass of remembrance and celebration for Walter’s love and laughter will be held on December 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Richardson, Texas.
