Artists of Tomorrow to Headline in Classical Concert on May 15
The Brentwood-Westwood Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Alvin Mille and assistant conductor Cary Belling, presents the winners of the annual Artists of Tomorrow contest on Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m. at Paul Revere Middle School auditorium, 1450 Allenford. The free classical music concert features: Stephanie Ng, senior piano, $500 scholarship winner, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff; Beiyao Ji, senior piano, $500 scholarship winner, Concerto #3 in D minor, Op 30 by Rachmaninoff; Ji Sun Jung, senior strings (cello), $500 scholarship winner, Cello Concerto #1 in E flat major, Op 107 by Shostakovich; Michelle Lavner, junior strings (violin) Concerto in D minor by Sibelius; Kazumi Kanagawa, junior piano, Concerto in F major for Piano, KV 459 by Mozart; Stefani Feldman, senior winds (clarinet), Concerto #1 by von Weber. PLATO Society to Host Policy Expert
The PLATO Society of UCLA Colloquium will feature ‘A Conversation With Sherry Bebitch Jeffe’ at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 at the Skirball Cultural Center. Admission is free. Dr. Jeffe is a senior fellow at USC’s School of Policy, Planning and Development and political analyst for KNBC, Los Angeles. The audience will have an opportunity to ask questions regarding public policy and politics and Jeffe will offer her broad insights on state, national and world affairs. Chamber Music Palisades Hosts Free Youth Concert May 15
A free youth concert featuring Young Musicians Foundation ensembles will take place on Sunday, May 15 at 3 p.m. at the Aldersgate Retreat Center, 925 Haverford. The program features Hannah Swayze, YMF Chamber Music winner, performing ‘Morceau de Concert’ of Saint Saens, and Chandler Yu, Chamber Music Palisades prizewinner, performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. In addition, one YMF Trio (Min-Jae Kim, violin, Hannah Swartz, horn and Lon Wei Hwang, piano) will perform the Horn Trio by Lennox Berkeley, and another (Jared Sleisenger, English horn, Alex Sleisenger, saxophone and Oksana Germsin, piano) will perform ‘New York Gardens’ by Adrienne Albert.
Cutting Edge Theater Company Recasts Seneca’s ‘Hercules Furens’ at Getty Villa
The Villa Theater Lab series at the Getty Villa will present the Not Man Apart Physical Theatre Ensemble’s production of ‘The Madness of Hercules’ from Friday through Sunday, May 20-22 in the Getty indoor auditorium. Performances will be held Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. ‘The Madness of Hercules,’ is a new play on ancient themes written and directed by Not Man Apart’s Artistic Director John Farmanesh-Bocca, based on Roman playwright Seneca the Younger’s original text. Considered one of Seneca’s finest tragedies, ‘Hercules Furens’ portrays one of the most bitter and grotesque legends of this half-mortal son of Zeus’Hercule’s maddened slaughter of his own innocent wife and children. Seneca’s play asks: How does a man survive his own unforgivable crimes? It is recommended for adult and teen audiences. For tickets ($7), call 310-440-7300.
