Pascale Petit, Lois Jones to Read Poetry at Moonday
Moonday in the Village will welcome celebrated British poet Pascale Petit and Poet’s Caf’ host Lois P. Jones in an audio/visual presentation of poetry and paintings at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 9 at Village Books on Swarthmore. Open reading sign-ups for this monthly gathering begin at 7 p.m. Petit’s latest book is ‘What the Water Gave Me: Poems after Frida Kahlo,’ a collection of poems in the voice of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. More than just a verse biography, it explores how the painter transformed trauma into art after her near-fatal bus accident. Petit trained at the Royal College of Art and spent the first part of her life as a visual artist. Since then she has published five collections of poetry, two of which, ‘The Huntress’ and ‘The Zoo Father,’ were short-listed for the T.S. Eliot Prize. She currently tutors for many organizations, including the Tate Modern in London, where she leads poetry courses in the galleries. Jones’ poetry and photographs have been published in a number of journals. Since 2008 she has hosted Poet’s Caf’, KPFK’s long-running Los Angeles radio series, which airs the second, fourth and fifth Wednesdays of each month at 8:30 p.m.’In 2010, her poem ‘Ouija’ was selected as Poem of the Year by judge Dana Goodyear. Multimedia Dance Program to Explore Love and Loss
For those who love dance in all its forms, the Miles Memorial Playhouse will present Tap Dance Widows Club for four shows only, beginning Friday, May 20 at 7:30 p.m. at 1130 Lincoln Blvd. in Santa Monica. An innovative work by Louise Reichlin and Dancers, the show brings together multiple dance forms, photographs and recorded conversations to tell a story that begins in 1930s Hollywood and moves through today. The memories of three widows, once wed to well-known dancers and choreographers, provide an aural narrative. The stories told by Louise Reichlin (widow of Alfred Desio), Loretta Zerby (widow of Jon Zerby) and Katherine Hopkins-Nicholas (widow of Fayard Nicholas) are both moving and funny. Dance and imagery are then layered over the audio track in an exploration of our changing perception of loss and the ‘positive baggage we carry with us when a loved one is no longer corporeal but still present,’ the producers say. Performances will continue at 4 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 21 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 22. For tickets ($13-$15), call (213) 385-1171 or visit lachoreographersanddancers.org. o o o
