Shiloh Unger had a plan. When he saw that his former preschool, Palisades Montessori Center, was holding its annual toy drive, he wanted to make sure that he could do his part to put a smile on a child’s face this holiday season.
So, he did what he has learned how to do: sell. Having learned through osmosis, watching his dad, Matt of LAcarGUY, he decided to make some money and give back.
He found a recipe for cookies, gathered the troops and along with his best friend and neighbor Sophie Maghami (another PMC alumni), they made some cookies from scratch. Then they set up their stand in front of their homes, took a nice picture for marketing and asked Mom to post it on Nextdoor.
Unger and Maghami also ran door to door and asked local construction workers to buy their organic homemade goods for charity. With a little help from his friends, Unger’s little sister Maddy and Maghami’s big sister Dina supervising, the kids sold out and made $71 right at sundown.
But that is not where the vision ends. Unger decided that in order to buy the most toys possible, he could phone up his grandfather—another salesman, Henry Unger, of Henry Unger and Associates.
He happens to be partners with Fiesta Toys, and for a wholesale price, with a friends and family discount, they counted out their dollars and cents at the office and filled up an extra-large SUV with stuffed animals.
Unger had a vision, a vision he shared with his best friend Maghami. They understood the power of teamwork and community. A business plan was formed, the legwork was done and they executed it from start to finish.
They made their teachers at PMC proud. It was a grand success, and a new wonderful tradition was formed.
