Tiger Woods announced Tuesday that he has committed to play in the 2017 Genesis Open to be held February 13-19 at Riviera Country Club. It will be Woods’ first appearance at the historic course since 2006.
Woods, whose TGR Live is the host of the Genesis Open, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation, made the announcement following his return in early December at the Hero World Challenge after more than 15 months away from competitive golf.
“I’m very excited to come back to Riviera and compete in the Genesis Open,” said Woods, who was born in Cypress and played collegiately at Stanford. “This is where it all started for me. It was my first PGA TOUR event, I was 16 years old, I weighed about 105 pounds and it was a life changing moment for me.”
Woods has not played the event (formerly called the Northern Trust Open) in 10 years. He made his PGA TOUR debut at Riviera in 1992. In March, the Tiger Woods Foundation, the PGA TOUR and Genesis announced a partnership under which TGR Live would manage the Los Angeles-area tournament. The tournament celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2016 when Bubba Watson won for the second time.
“It’s an honor to have TGR Live running this historic event that will benefit my foundation,” added Woods, who returned to competitive golf this month for the first time since August, 2015, finishing 4-under par in the 18-player Hero World Challenge.
Woods, 40, has won 14 majors and 106 professional events, including 70 PGA victories (second all-time). He has not announced his 2017 playing schedule aside from the Genesis Open.
