Pacific Palisades historian and novelist Robert Rosenstone discusses his new novel, ‘Red Star, Crescent Moon: A Muslim-Jewish Love Story,’ which mixes the contemporary and the historical in a bold tale of clashing cultures, 7:30 p.m. at Village Books on Swarthmore. A professor of history at Caltech, Rosenstone has published a dozen books of history, criticism, memoir and fiction, including a novel, ‘King of Odessa,’ based on the life of Russian Jewish writer Isaac Babel. His book, ‘Romantic Revolutionary: A Biography of John Reed,’ served in part as the basis of the Academy Award-winning film, ‘Reds,’ on which he served as historical consultant.

The NFL’s annual Punt, Pass and Kick qualifying event will be held in the Palisades High School football stadium, 8 a.m. to noon. Kids ages 6 to 15 are eligible. Temescal Canyon Association hikers begin their annual Sunday hikes by starting at upper Bienveneda Avenue and taking the Leacock Trail to Temescal, down Rivas Canyon, then up to Will Rogers for a round trip of about eight miles with moderate gain. The public is invited. Meet at 9 a.m. in the Temescal Gateway Park parking lot for carpooling. Information: visit temcanyon.org. Charles Fleming signs and discusses ‘Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles,’ 11 a.m. at Village Books on Swarthmore. Containing more than 40 walks and detailed maps, this handbook highlights the charms and quirks of this quintessential feature of Los Angeles’ development and chronicles the geographical, architectural and historical features of each staircase and the neighborhoods in which the steps are located, including Pacific Palisades. (See Lifestyle feature, page 11.). The 35-member Santa Monica Oceanaires Barbershop Chorus will give a concert, 4 p.m. in the Palisades Lutheran Church sanctuary, corner of Sunset and El Medio. Admission is free, but portions of the free-will offering will benefit the Westside Food Bank.

The Pacific Palisades Art Association resumes its monthly meetings, 7 p.m. at the Woman’s Club, 901 Haverford Ave. The speaker is Lloyd Cameron, who will demonstrate his use of acrylics in painting. The public is invited.

Frank Mundo discusses and signs ‘Brubury Tales,’ a modern take on the ‘Canterbury Tales’ set in Los Angeles. For 14 years, Mundo worked as a graveyard-shift security guard in Los Angeles, a job that allowed him to write and publish hundreds of stories, poems, essays, book reviews and author interviews. Currently a Lead Content Developer for UCG Publishing, Mundo earned a B.A. in English from UCLA, where he completed the Creative Writing Program.
