Palisadian Leighton Meester can next be seen in a starring role in “The Weekend Away”—based on the eponymous novel by Sarah Alderson.
Described as a thriller, the film follows Meester as Beth and Christina Wolfe as Kate, two best friends who go on a vacation that ends up horribly wrong.
“Beth is at first a little wary about their trip abroad, but is quickly sucked into the spirit of it all with single friend Kate who wants the two to celebrate and enjoy their time together,” according to a synopsis by Collider. “Egged on by Kate, the duo heads out for dinner followed by an exciting evening at a packed nightclub … When Beth wakes up the next day, with seemingly no recollection of the prior night’s events, she soon becomes frantic as she discovers her best friend has vanished without a trace.”
Based in Croatia, Beth is left racing to uncover what happened to Kate, “but each clue yields another unsettling deception,” according to Netflix.
Meester and Wolfe are joined by Luke Norris, Ziad Bakri, Amar Bukvic and more.
“The Weekend Away” is directed by Kim Farrant, and executive produced by Alderson and Kari Hatfield. Erica Steinberg, Charlie Morrison and Ben Pugh produced the film.
“I am so excited to see ‘The Weekend Away’ make it to the screen,” Alderson said in a statement in June 2021. “To have adapted my own novel makes it even more special, and I am thrilled that Leighton will be bringing this character to life.”
Meester has previously starred in “Gossip Girl,” “The Roommate” and can be seen in the spin-off “How I Met Your Father” on Hulu.
The film, with a runtime of one hour and 31 minutes, premiered worldwide on Netflix on Thursday, March 3.
