The Shade Store opened its Pacific Palisades location on Friday, January 6—taking over the space formerly occupied by a Robeks smoothie shop on Antioch Street.
Founded in 1946, The Shade Store provides custom window treatment services, offering shades, blinds, drapes and more.
“We founded The Shade Store to provide a simple alternative to a traditionally difficult shopping experience,” according to the store’s website. “We’re a wholly curated custom window treatment service—bringing the best to your windows, and providing the kind of high-end design assistance and support that can only come with three generations of expertise.”
The store has over 130 showrooms nationwide, where design consultants are on hand to assist.
“Your personal destination for the finest handcrafted shades, blinds and drapery is now open in Pacific Palisades,” according to the store’s website. “Visit our new showroom to sample our curated collection of luxurious textiles and designer exclusives, experience every handcrafted product, and receive complimentary assistance from our team of expert design consultants.”
Design consultants are also available to assist virtually—via video, phone, live chat or email. Free swatches are available to order, including top customer picks and designer favorites.
Some of the most popular swatches, according to the website, are Alma White, Luxe Linen Beige, Sankaty Stripe Sand and Tangier Weave Blanco.
The Shade Room was brought before the Pacific Palisades Design and Review Board for review in May 2021. The board voiced concerns at the time, stating previously submitted plans were “‘cold’ and ‘stiff’ in its own corporate branding.” Two features discussed at length during the May meeting were proposed changes of the storefront to black anodized aluminum and facade signs to a brushed steel with edge lit letters. Board members asked The Shade Store to resubmit plans.
Michael Busch Jr., an architectural designer for The Shade Store, returned to the board in June 2021 with changes to the metal panels to match buildings in the area, an added open canopy that wraps around the front and side to relate to the depth of existing tenants, and extended windows. Busch also introduced the store’s landscape plan, which was said to feature greenery.
The updated plan was approved unanimously.
“We’re thrilled to open our doors in the Pacific Palisades and continue to better service the needs of our customers throughout the LA area,” VP of Sales at The Shade Store Adam Skalman said to the Palisadian-Post. “We have a fantastic team of local design consultants who look forward to partnering with local homeowners to become their go-to resource for premium custom window treatments.”
A grand opening, ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by the Malibu-Pacific Palisades Chamber of Commerce, is slated for Thursday, March 16.
