Palisadian Ted Danson will remain in office for a second season of “Mr. Mayor,” set to premiere Tuesday, March 15.
“‘Mr. Mayor’ follows a retired businessman (Danson) who runs for mayor of Los Angeles to prove he’s ‘still got it,’” according to a description of the sitcom series. “Once he wins, he has to figure out what he stands for, gain the respect of his biggest critic (Holly Hunter) and connect with his teenage daughter, all while trying to get anything right for America’s second weirdest city.”
The first season of the series, produced by University Television (a division of Universal Studio Group), Little Stranger, Bevel Gears and 3 Arts Entertainment, starred Danson, Hunter, Vella Lovell, Mike Cabellon, Kayla Kenedy and Bobby Moynihan.
“Having Ted Danson and Holly Hunter leading this brilliant ensemble is a dream,” Lisa Katz, president of scripted content at NBCUniversal Entertainment and Streaming, said in a statement.
The show debuted to “solid numbers,” marking the network’s “best Thursday comedy launch in total viewers (6.6 million in Live+7) since the premiere of the ‘Will & Grace’ revival in 2017,” Variety reported.
It is executive produced by Robert Carlock, Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond and David Minor, with Eric Gurian as co-executive producer.
“Several members of the team developed friendships with each other, their differing perspectives helping the characters see their own lives in new ways,” according to Looper. “Season [two] promises to continue this trend as the mayoral team and Orly become more adept at navigating the city’s issues and better understand each other.
“In an interview with TVLine, Vella Lovell spoke about how comedy, rather than politics, is the show’s first priority, and that is sure to remain Mr. Mayor’s focus when it returns for its second season.”
