Sylvia L Steyling, a 60-year resident of Pacific Palisades, died on December 10 at the age of 98. She and her husband Richard, who predeceased her in 1990, were founding members of the Pacific Palisades Residents Association, with Richard serving as first president. Sylvia was born in Nebraska on November 2, 1914, but lived for part of her childhood in Julesburg, Colorado. After graduating from high school in Utah, she attended Long Beach State College and graduated with a degree in liberal arts in 1933. She married Milton Roth and gave birth to her son, Anthony. The marriage ended in divorce. Soon after, Sylvia married Richard Steyling. The couple moved to Pacific Palisades where they built a house on Las Pulgas, which was part of the South Down Farms, developed by Pardee Homes, a local developer. The couple were married for 44 years. Sylvia was a member of the Riviera Country Club, where she played on the women’s golf team for many years. Helping her community was very important to Sylvia, who served on various boards, including the Palisades Garden Club, the Woman’s Club, the Assistance League of Santa Monica and the National Charity League. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends, many of whom celebrated her 98th birthday with her in November. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Zajkowksi of Pacific Palisades and Palm Springs (husband Chris); grandson Nicholas Zajkowksi, specialist U.S. Army Military Police, stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado; son Anthony Craig Roth (wife Gale) of Seattle, and their stepson Jarrod (wife Amy) and children Logan, Megan and Ian of Port Orchard, Washington.
