Superkind Cookies, which now delivers to Pacific Palisades, operates on the idea that there is nothing better than a warm chocolate chip cookie.
Dawn Perry, who has a baker’s dozen years of experience in food media, moved from New York to Malibu in November 2020. When researching and developing recipes for her first full-length cookbook, which is due out this fall, Perry made nearly 20 versions of chocolate chip cookies, searching for the perfect combination.
Originally, working with her husband, they thought about shipping dough to people, possibly trying to sell it as slice and bake, but they eventually settled on hand-delivered, warm, chocolate chip cookies.
“As we told friends and family that we were thinking about doing this, it was sort of like, jaws dropped, eyes roll and then, ‘Oh, my God, I love chocolate chip cookies,’” Perry recalled. “No one doesn’t like a warm chocolate chip cookie.”
After figuring out logistics, including securing a Cottage Food license for her Point Dume home, Perry and her husband were ready to start delivering at the start of February.
“It’s been so positive,” Perry said of the reception. “I think we’re so desperate for moments of joy … this felt like a way to help create that. Every week we kind of get to share that in part with our customers.”
Superkind Cookies are made with specially selected ingredients that Perry shared she knows to be tried and true through her years of work experience, including organic chocolate from Guittard Chocolate Company in Northern California, King Arthur Flour and real butter.
The cookies are designed to have a crispy outer edge and a chewy center—and they always arrive warm.
Perry started with offering Superkind Cookies’ signature chocolate chip, which will always be available, but has since introduced flavors of the month, like salted peanut butter for April. Deliveries are available in increments of four.
A portion of each sale goes to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer—a nonprofit dedicated to awarding grants to fund research into new, improved and less toxic therapies for pediatric cancer.
“For me, it’s like any business venture these days, I don’t want to be a part of it if there’s not a charitable component,” Perry shared, adding that it is a “wonderful organization that raises really important money for really important pediatric cancer research.”
Superkind has since expanded its delivery range to cover Downtown LA, Los Feliz, Pasadena, Silver Lake, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Koreatown and more.
“We hope everyone has the chance to try the cookies,” Perry concluded.
