Palisadian Steve Cron, 70, has announced his intent to run in the upcoming Pacific Palisades Community Council area elections in hopes of being the future representative of the esteemed Highlands neighborhood, or Area 2.
Cron has served as PPCC secretary in the past, as well as Area 2 alternate. He has also been co-hosting the Palisades Podcast with Brook Dougherty, which highlights interesting members of the community.
After taking a break from local government, he is now slowing down his criminal defense law practice, and is eager to return and bring new perspectives to the council.
“I saw a lot of acrimony on the [PPCC], a lot of arguing and people making allegations,” Cron said in an interview with the Palisadian-Post. “I’ve always thought of myself as someone who can bring people together and get along with everybody and [people] of all stripes and so I thought, ‘This seems like it would be a good time.’”
Cron is throwing his hat into the ring at a critical time for The Highlands, as residents face an ongoing battle with an incoming eldercare facility at 1525 Palisades Drive that has been slated for an appeal hearing before the Coastal Commission on July 11.
“I swim at the ocean, I ride my bike along the ocean. The coast is sacrosanct for me. I want to make sure that the Coastal Commission investigates [the eldercare facility] thoroughly and makes sure that what is being done is within the guidelines … I want to make sure that environmentally and in every other way it’s an appropriate use of the land.”
Current Area 2 Rep alternate Alan Goldsmith told the Post he is still undecided and 2nd Alternate Leah Cox did not respond to a request for comment.
Rick Mills (Area 4), Sue Kohl (Area 5), David Kaplan (Area 6), Reza Akef (Area 8) and Lou Kamer (At-Large) will be seeking reelection as area representatives, with an official candidates list by the PPCC scheduled to be disclosed on July 26.
