Pencil in these dates: St. Matthew’s Music Guild has announced its 35th season of “World Class Music Close To Home”—beginning with a show on Friday, October 4, at 8 p.m.
“The seven-concert series will feature the critically acclaimed Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s—a fully professional 35-member ensemble in residence at St. Matthew’s since 1985, plus world class soloists and ensembles,” a press release explained.
The Music Guild will feature world-renowned violinist Movses Pogossian at its first show of the season. Pogossian won the Tchaikovsky International Competition at the age of 30 and became the youngest ever first place winner of the 1985 USSR National Violin Competition.
Next up, on November 1, Voces8, a British vocal ensemble, will perform their “Choral Dances” program, featuring “timeless classics, juxtaposing Renaissance music with jazz and pop standards.” Pieces range from William Byrd’s “Vigilate” and Benjamin Britten’s “Choral Dances” to music by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and more.
The 35th season will also include an annual Holiday Concert in December, “A Night on the Boulevard Saint-Germain” in January, South African pianist Petronel Malan on March 13, Canadian Jens Lindemann in April and concluding with music by Hadyn, Stravinsky and William Grant Still in June.
Dr. Dwayne S. Milburn will begin his second season as music director and conductor. He explained that the series “follows the Music Guild’s highly successful tradition of blending old and new, familiar and unfamiliar while featuring some of the best local, national and international artists in concerts in the architecturally inspiring Charles Moore building.”
All concerts take place at St. Matthew’s Church, located at 1031 Bienveneda Ave. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit musicguildonline.org or call 310-573-7422.
