During quarantine, we have been stuck inside a lot. I watch TV. I play Among Us—a game where you try to identify the imposter. I read. I do Legos. After doing all of these things, my eyes feel tired but my body is just a big pile of blech. And while my brain definitely misses Disneyland, my body misses something else more. It misses sports.
I do many sports. Soccer, karate, and gymnastics to name a few. First, let’s start with soccer. Soccer is a sport I like a lot, but without AYSO and my Saturday morning games, it just isn’t the same. I do a lot of karate, but I haven’t been able to take normal classes in my dojo. And gymnastics are hard when you can’t roll on any of the pads.
Sports are some of my best friends, and best friends are hard to let go of. So while our friendship can’t be the same as it was, that doesn’t mean we can’t still be friends. So I started a soccer clinic with a few teammates, where we wear masks and we move our bodies. My sensei took our karate to the park, where we do our kicks and our punches outdoors—with all the extra time I have to take classes, I have become a black belt! I even learned new sports like surfing, because it is very easy to socially distance in the big blue sea.
Some mornings it is hard to move your body. Those are the ways I do it. I do it because I love hanging out with my friends.
