Mexico City-based septet Klezmerson will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 5 at the Skirball Cultural Center on Mulholland off the 405 freeway.
Composer, violinist and pianist Benjamin Shwartz founded the project in 2003 in order to explore and create a new type of klezmer music—one originating from a distinctly Jewish-Mexican standpoint. The band accomplishes this by combining melodies and rhythms from Eastern Europe’s Jewish musical tradition with gypsy, Middle Eastern and Latin American influences as well as elements of rock, funk and jazz improvisation.
In addition to Shwartz, Klezmerson features an all-star line up of accomplished musicians, including Juan “Ma” Ledezma (guitar); two-time Grammy-winner Daniel Zlotnik (saxophone); David (Chatran) Gonzalez (percussion); María Emilia Martínez (flute); Grammy-winner and member of Mexican alternative rock group Jaguares, Marco Renteria (bass, composition); and Carlos (Chali) Mercado Cain (drums and percussion).
Klezmerson has performed in prestigious concert halls and music festivals in Mexico as well as in Europe and Canada. The Skirball performance is the band’s first U.S. appearance.
