The annual fundraiser for Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA)—the Pasadena Showcase House of Design—will be on view through May 19 in Arcadia.
One of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the country, Showcase is in its 49th year.
Built in 1941, this year’s house was designed by noted residential architect Roland E. Coate, Sr., and features renowned designers from all over Southern California.
The Monterey Colonial residence exhibits stylistic features of a number of Colonial Revival subtypes—a mixture the architect was well known for in his attempt to create a native “California style.”
Designed for prominent furniture executive C. Lawrence Barker, of the former Southland furniture company Barker Brothers, the estate features a two-story, 10,433-sq.-ft home, several gardens, a tennis/basketball court, a swimming pool with spa and a pool house, all set on 1.79 acres among mature trees.
In order to preserve the estate’s architectural integrity while giving the 19 interior and nine exterior designers the tools to create an updated, contemporary look, the Showcase team consulted with their interior advisor, Jennifer Bevan Montoya, and Sara A. McLean of Dunn-Edwards Corporation.
“The color selection began about five months ago, shortly after this residence was chosen, and we began selecting fabrics,” Bevan said. “Then, we created a color scheme that could transition harmoniously from room to room and still be broad enough to give the designers sufficient latitude creatively.”
The success of the event has enabled PSHA to make cumulative donations of over $18 million to support outstanding music and arts programs throughout the community.
