Last weekend, on May 21, more than 250 children 3 to 10 years old stormed Palisades Charter High School for the inaugural Scooter for Batten fundraiser benefitting The Charlotte and Gwenyth Gray Foundation to battle Batten disease. The event raised more than $33,000.

Palisadians Charlotte and Gwenyth Gray, daughters of Gordon and Kristen Gray, are among an estimated 10 children living with the rare neurodegenerative disease.
The Gray Foundation has raised nearly $4 million since its establishment in June 2015. The funding has already allowed Charlotte and Gwenyth to start a new clinical trial at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

While kids were not scootering they had myriad activity stations to participate in, including martial arts, arts and crafts, traditional and aerial yoga, a princess meet-and-greet, face painting, dancing and a DJ. The event also featured prize drawings that included Disneyland passes, tickets to see “The Voice” finale, Razor scooter products and clothing and beauty packages.

One of the event’s organizers, Marisa Rood, said the outpouring of community support has been incredible. “The event could not have gone any better,” she said. “It was a wonderful day and the kids had a blast.”
