Palisades High alums Geoff and Mitchell Schwartz are anxious to begin the NFL season with their respective teams.
Geoff, a right guard for the New York Giants, saw his first action of the preseason Aug. 23 versus Jacksonville. Schwartz missed 14 games last year with toe and ankle injuries.
Meanwhile, younger brother Mitchell has been a standout at right tackle for Cleveland, on the field for 70 percent of the offensive snaps in a 31-7 victory over Tampa Bay last week. The Browns wrap up their preseason schedule tonight at Chicago.
Geoff was an All-City first team offensive and defensive lineman Palisades and won the Post Cup Award as the school’s oustanding senior athlete. Mitchell was the City Section Offensive Lineman of the Year as a senior. They are the first Jewish brothers to play in the NFL since Ralph and Arnold Horween in 1923.
One reason Washington has won its first three preseason games is the foot of Kai Forbath. The Redskins’ placekicker booted field goals of 52 and 33 yards against Cleveland, two extra points against Detroit and four extra points and a 44-yard field goal against Baltimore. Washington hosts Jacksonville tonight.
Forbath grew up in the Highlands and won three CIF Southern Section Division III titles at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, where he was a USA Today first team All-American.
After spending his first four seasons in Chicago, safety Chris Conte signed a one-year contract with Tampa Bay in March and had one tackle last week against Cleveland. The Buccaneers’ final tuneup is tonight at Miami.
Conte grew up in the El Medio Bluffs, attended Corpus Christi School and helped Loyola High win the CIF Southern Section Division I title his junior year.
