Julia Gallivan is the Capybaras Patrol leader in Troop 223 Girls, which completed a Career Trip.
The Capybaras Patrol visited the Santa Monica Police Department in April to learn about K9 handlers for our Career Trip. We met with K9 officers Marioni and Barcella in the conference rooms where we asked questions about K9s, training and the police department. We also received stickers, baseball cards and police pens in the conference room.
Then we took a tour of the station, where we visited the holding cells, the juvenile lounges, the police cars, the shooting range and said hi to Ford, another police K9. We then learned about the explorers’ program where teens 15 to 20 years old can intern and observe police officers. After our visit many scouts in our patrol were interested in joining the explorers’ program. Then the scouts were picked up by their parents at the lobby.
In Troop 223 we are always learning about the world around us, whether we are completing merit badges, going on campouts, or coming to Career Trips or Good Turn Trips. We certainly learned a lot on our Career Trip and hopefully we can give other people opportunities to join our scouting troop, Troop 223, by raising awareness.
