Palisadian author Amelia Saltsman’s ‘The Santa Monica Farmers’ Market Cookbook,’ has been named to Cooking Light magazine’s Top 100 Cookbooks of the Last 25 Years. The book is one of five in the Healthy Cooking/Lifestyle category, which focuses on fresh ingredients, whole grains and interesting approaches to healthy eating. ‘We looked through basketfuls of market-based cookbooks before picking ‘The Santa Monica Farmers’ Market Cookbook’ as best in field,’ wrote the magazine’s editors. ‘As an inspiration for moving fresh produce to the center of your plate, it’s a winner.’ Saltsman’s book will be featured in the January/February 2012 issue, on newsstands at the end of the month. In her book, Saltsman acquaints the reader not only with seasonal varieties’she champions those seldom found in the supermarket, but she also reacquaints the cook with vegetables, like carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, that we take for granted. ‘When these everyday crops ‘sing,’ that’s something to write about,’ she said in an interview with the Palisadian-Post in 2007. She lets the food lead the way; the recipes follow. She says simply, ‘The ingredients definitely talk to me.’ Her recipes reflect the season at hand and her first line of attack is to ‘stay out of the way of the ingredients.’ A writer, cooking teacher, television host, Saltsman maintains a healthy schedule, pursuing her goal of ‘getting everyone into the kitchen.’ She will be conducting a Santa Monica Market tour and cooking demonstration at the ‘Eating for Good’ weekend retreat on January 21 and 22 at the YMCA in Santa Monica.
