Acclaimed violinist—and resident of the Riviera since 2016—Anne Akiko Meyers will be performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall in a series of concerts October 13 through 16.
Conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, the program features works by Gabriela Ortiz, Arturo Márquez and Aaron Copland.
“Music by two of Mexico’s greatest living composers begin this exhilarating concert,” according to a synopsis on the LA Phil website. “Dudamel leads encore performances of Ortiz’ spiritual ‘Kauyumari,’ which was premiered in the LA Phil’s 2021 return to Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Márquez’ ‘Fandango,’ a violin concerto inspired by the composer’s love of the dance music he grew up listening to in Sonora with new ‘melodies that sound old and are worth keeping,’ according to the Los Angeles Times’ review of its 2021 world premiere at the Hollywood Bowl.”
Following an intermission, the concerts will conclude with Copland’s “Third Symphony,” which is “built in part on his immortal ‘Fanfare for the Common Man.’”
The concerts are part of the Pan-American Music Initiative, which is billed as a five-year effort featuring more than 30 new commissions, recording projects and collaborations to “showcase the artistry and invention of music across borders.”
Born in San Diego and growing up in Southern California, Meyers and her mother traveled eight hours roundtrip from the Mojave Desert to Pasadena for lessons with Alice and Eleanor Schoenfeld at the Colburn School of Performing Arts, according to her website.
“She continued her studies with Josef Gingold at Indiana University, and moved to New York at the age of 14 to study with Felix Galimir, Masao Kawasaki and legendary teacher, Dorothy DeLay, at the Juilliard School,” the website continued. “She has received the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Distinguished Alumna Award from the Colburn School of Music and the Luminary Award from the Pasadena Symphony, and is on the advisory council of the American Youth Symphony.”
She has been featured in commercials and advertising campaigns, starting with two nationally televised appearances on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson and “Evening At Pops” with John Williams in the ’80s.
Meyers will be performing “Fandango,” which is a violin concerto “written for and premiered by her” at the Hollywood Bowl in 2021.
Following the performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Meyers will head to Carnegie Hall in New York City and Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City.
