Kara Barnard (38:34) and Ankur Tarneja (33:47) set records on the newly certified 10K course. Earlier this year, race organizers decided that as part of the 35th anniversary of the 10K run they wanted the course officially certified, but found that it was slightly shy of 6.2 miles. They proceeded to add a short run up Chautauqua (off Sunset) to Drummond, then left on Drummond to Sunset and on to Carey before finishing at Alma Real. Barnard, a 1996 Palisades High graduate, has now won the Will Rogers 5K fives times and the 10K six times. She lives in Durango, Colorado, but returns almost every July to celebrate her father’s birthday, unsure whether or not she will run. ‘My dad [James] is my impetus,’ said Barnard, 33, who was a member of the Palisades cross-country team that won the City championship in 1994. She also ran cross-country and track at UCLA and is now a professional harpist. ‘My dad was always a champion for me in high school and college,’ Barnard. ‘He made all of my high school meets and as many of my college meets as he could.’ Barnard was not able to do much running before July 4, because of the forest fires in Colorado. ‘It was really tough with all the fires. The smoke and the high temperatures were not conducive to training.’ Tarneja, 30, made his Will Rogers debut, averaging a 5:27 pace. ‘I practiced running the course before the race,’ he said, noting that the toughest aspect of the race was the switchbacks up the hill at Will Rogers Park. Tarneja, a lawyer who lives in Van Nuys, played club soccer at Wake Forest and in recent years has focused on marathons: Berlin last September, Boston in April, Chicago this October. His best marathon time is 2:31.40. The only Palisadian in the top 10 was Harvard-Westlake track standout Cami Chapus, 18, who finished in 42:41. Last month the Stanford-bound Chapus competed in the Adidas Dream Mile, an invitation-only event in New York City. She successfully defended her title, running 4:39.64. Palisadian Lynn Borland first ran the race in 1978 as a 36-year-old, finishing in 47 minutes. Since Borland is a Ridge Runner and usually helps with race-day activities, he has rarely run the race, but after turning 70 this year, he decided to run to celebrate. ‘I pulled a hamstring around four and half miles,’ Borland said. ‘I’ve run in more than 150 races and never had an injury before.’ He was running with Troy Elander, Susan Spira and Elizabeth Farnham when he felt a pop. ‘I was able to stretch my leg and then run slower, but I didn’t have any punch,’ said Borland, who finished at 53:09’still good enough for second in his age category.
