Claire Liu headed a list of Palisades Tennis Center trainees who won big two weekends ago, as she captured the U.S. National Clay Court Championships in Plantation, Florida, in the Girls U14s to cement her position as the top-ranked U.S. player in her age group.
By defeating Dominique Schaefer of Ventura, 6-4, 6-2, in the final, the Thousand Oaks native earned her first “Gold Ball” in singles, representing a USTA super national championship.
Palisades High sophomore Ben Goldberg earned third place in the Southwest draw in the boys 14s after being forced to withdraw against Dobbs.
Goldberg also teamed with Lucas Bellamy to win the boys 14 doubles at the Knowlwood Junior Tournament in Santa Barbara on July 22. The duo trounced Kevin Ha and Miles Hale, 6-1, 6-2 in the finals.
Also at Knowlwood, Lincoln Bellamy, the fourth and youngest Bellamy, won the boys 12 doubles with Hayden Gura, as the top-seeded tandem defeated No. 2 seed Elias Weeks and Cody Ray Emery, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0.
