Two Palisadians are leading their respective teams this fall at Archer School for Girls in Brentwood.
Zoe Pelikan, a 2015 Palisadian-Post Athlete of the Year, is a senior setter on the Panthers’ varsity volleyball squad and was honored before Archer’s regular-season finale against Pacifica Christian on Oct. 24 at Santa Monica College. Pelikan played 28 sets in the regular season, recording 14 kills, 10 aces, six blocks, 42 digs and a team-high 106 assists for Archer, which won its second straight Liberty League title and hosted St. Bonaventure on Tuesday in the first round of the Southern Section Division 7 playoffs. As a junior, Pelikan set a school record with 528 assists while pacing the Panthers to the CIF semifinals and earnd California Player of the Week honors last November.
While Pelikan is in the twilight of her Archer career, Hailey Hubbard is in the dawn of hers. The 7th-grader from the Via Bluffs won her age group in 22:18 at the Palisades-Will Rogers 5K on July 4 and it proved to be a foreshadowing of her recent successes in cross country.
Running for Archer’s middle school squad, Hubbard placed first overall at all four Pacific Basin League meets this year and the Panthers were favored to win Tuesday’s league finals at Kenneth Hahn Park.
Over the summer, Hubbard played midfield on the Westside Breakers’ U12 international soccer team, which took first place in its group at the Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden. One of her teammates was friend and fellow Palisadian Adelle Levi.
