The Annual Walk for Breast Cancer Research Returns Virtually in 2020
By SARAH SHMERLING | Editor-in-Chief
Each year, Palisadian runners and walkers join the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation in spring for the annual Walk With Love—and this year is no exception, even though the May 17 event will be completed virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since its inception in 2008, the walk has raised millions of dollars to support breast cancer research. Typically the foundation hosts events in Pacific Palisades, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara.
“In this time of uncertainty, we remain committed to our mission, to end breast cancer,” Dr. Susan Love, founder and chief visionary officer, shared in a statement. “Breast cancer doesn’t stop because the world seemingly stops.”
Returning for the 12th year in a row, Palisadians will have the opportunity to raise funds and awareness to support research conducted by the foundation, with a goal of $250,000.
“This year, both Charity Navigator and Medical News Today ranked us the top breast cancer research organization in the U.S. for our stewardship of resources and impact,” the statement continues. “With your support, we can achieve even more.”
The team is encouraging participants to join in the “walk” however they want, which could mean a yoga class, spin on a stationary bike, go for a run—whatever gets them moving and also falls within compliance of state- and county-mandated orders.

“Going virtual this year, we’re able to engage more walkers and supporters than ever before,” Love shared with the Palisadian-Post. “It’s an unprecedented time with medical research more important than ever before.”
Funds raised through this year’s walk will support the next phase of the foundation’s Microbiome Project.
Virtual participants can register as an individual for $35 or $75 to become a VIP. Those who register will receive a Walk With Love bundle, including a T-shirt, custom walker bib and social media toolkit to help share the experience online. VIP virtual participants will receive the Walk With Love bundle, as well as a collectible lapel pin.
Participants also have the option to join or start a team, with a team name and fundraising goal.
As the Post went to print on Tuesday, nearly $30,000 had been raised so far.
“I hope everyone joins us on May 17,” Love concluded.
