he Westside Surf, a youth soccer team featuring three Palisadians, reached the State Cup finals in San Bernardino on February 17, finishing second out of 64 teams in three weekends of play of single-elimination games throughout California.
Palisadians Sunay Bargotra, Henry Sanderson and Wyatt Sarkisian helped guide the Surf in a remarkable turnaround that saw the team transform into a top-flight team just two years after going 1-18.
Throughout their struggles, the Surf players continued to work hard and persevere, achieving a 27-1-1 record this season. In the playoffs, the Surf won seven straight games, including four single elimination contests, outscoring opponents 18-5 to reach the finals before falling, 2-0, to ASD Academy of San Diego.
“The type of work our players put in during training should always be rewarded in some way or another,” said Surf head coach Joseph Pehanich. “They worked hard for each other day in and day out, and because of that they were successful. We are so proud of these boys. They have a tone of character and have done a tremendous job in positively representing themselves as a group.”
