The Palisadian-Post has welcomed three new interns that will assist over the course of summer, from writing stories to proofing the paper. Look out for their work in upcoming editions of the paper.
Coco Merritt
Hi, I’m Coco Merritt, and I’m thrilled to be interning for the Palisadian-Post this summer. I am a rising senior at Palisades Charter High School, and am entering my fourth year there.
I live in Brentwood, California, but have been tied to the Palisades for years as my mom lived there growing up and I attended Paul Revere Charter Middle School previously. As I attend Pali, I am also a Pali Ambassador, and attend various community events in the Palisades as well as across Los Angeles.
I am currently a part of Pali’s journalism program, Tideline, and am entering my second year in the program. I will spend my senior year as the sports editor, assisting the news section. I have written for both the sports and news sections throughout my year in Tideline, and have thoroughly enjoyed learning the different aspects of writing and editing.
My interest in journalism started while I was attending Paul Revere, but as I was a part of the music department, I was never able to pursue the program there. I was thrilled when the application opened for Tideline at Pali, and had a fantastic experience with my first year in the paper. I am looking forward to being an editor next year, and am excited to use my time with the Post to expand my editing knowledge.
This summer, I am most excited to see how a real-time newspaper runs, and learn how the stories that I read and that are written about activities that I participate in are actually written and edited. I am excited to write stories about events that occur outside of Pali High, and be able to expand to the entire Palisades community.
I am looking forward to spending my summer at the Post, and can’t wait to learn from all the writers and editors.
Sofi Fischer
My name is Sofi, and I moved to Pacific Palisades when I was 4 years old. I am currently a rising senior at Palisades Charter High School, as well as a rising features editor for my school magazine, Tideline. The Palisades is my home, and I am so grateful to have grown up in an environment that has an uplifting and unique sense of community.
My love for writing began in middle school, when I learned how to play the guitar and eventually write my own music. I originally considered writing to be more of a hobby at the time, but as I got older it became my passion. I admire that a writer is able to use their voice in a way that is powerful enough to touch the hearts and souls of many, which is really what drew me to journalism. I want to make an impact in my community and I want my voice to be heard through my writing.
The Palisadian-Post is an integral part of the Palisades community, and I consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to learn from driven and dedicated writers outside of the classroom and in the world of journalism. This experience does not only allow me to enhance my writing skills, but it also gives me the exposure to help guide me through college and beyond.
Writing will always be a part of who I am, and I am extremely excited to see where this journey takes me.
Eve Kaplan
Hi! My name is Eve Kaplan and I’m a rising sophomore. I am the Co-Editor-in-Chief of GirlTalk Magazine, a feminist magazine founded in 2017, publishing bimonthly, run by high schoolers. I am a social media intern for Spearhead Magazine, an online magazine looking to give a voice to young writers in college and high school. I am also a summer intern with Writopia Lab and will be supporting the creative writing of children ages 7 to11.
My publications for both journalism pieces and creative writing pieces include Bindweed Magazine, Teen Ink, Dead Skunk Magazine, Fem Magazine and many more.
My publications in journalism began in seventh grade when I started submitting pieces to GirlTalk. I loved expressing my voice, and have since dedicated my teenage years to empowering and giving a voice to other young writers.
Outside of writing, I love photography, running, reading and volleyball. I grew up playing beach volleyball in Pacific Palisades. I used to take the bus after practice to my friend’s house. My friends and I walked to CVS for hair dye, biked to the beach and ate meals at Garden Cafe. The Palisades has always been somewhere friends connected, practices occurred and sports games commenced.
As I sat on Bus 9 driving up Chautauqua Boulevard, I scrolled through the news on my phone. Before I loved writing, I loved reading. I consumed articles online and when I was younger, the Harry Potter series 13 times. I am a writer, but I am also a reader and that’s why the people who read my articles mean so much to me.
I am not only excited to report for the Palisadian-Post, but I am excited to speak and engage with the people who read my works. I can’t wait to join the team at the Post to tell stories, educate and investigate.
