Aēsop opened in Palisades Village on Friday, October 21, bringing its line of luxury skincare products to the development.
Founded in 1987 by hairdresser Dennis Paphitis, Aēsop features fragrance, hair and home products alongside its skincare. Aēsop’s products feature a range of “intriguing” ingredients, from cardamom and black pepper to geranium leaf and mandarin rind.
“Our objective has always been to formulate skin, hair and body care products of the finest quality; we investigate widely to source plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients, and use only those with a proven record of safety and efficacy,” according to the Aēsop website.
The Australian skincare brand previously opened stores in London, Paris and China. The brand’s recent expansion comes after the COVID-19 pandemic, with hopes of generating customer engagement.
“The days of customers wanting us only in the neighborhoods have passed, and we actually now need to be more present,” Aēsop’s General Manager Karl Wederell said in an interview with Vogue Business. “[The new locations offer] a bigger stage and a broader audience to appeal to.”
Wederell also said Aēsop tries to curate a “unique and special” space relative to the area it will be located. Designed with Odami studio, the Palisades was granted a “leafy space” inspired by the coastal town.
“Aēsop Palisades Village borrows the vernacular of the area’s iconic architecture: houses that perch lightly within a cascading topography, their inside-outside boundaries blurred—views of the ocean framed by horizontal timber beams that appear to hover high above the terrain,” according to Aēsop. “Evoking the residences’ lush surroundings, a verdant garden lies at the heart of the store … The shared basin, cast in green micro-cement, unfolds around the plants, blending into its leafy surrounds. Planes of reclaimed timber balance nimbly in the form of drawers, benches and a tucked-away seat.”
Aēsop—formerly Village Optic—is located next to Jennifer Meyer at 1052 Swarthmore Avenue.
Within the development, spaces previously occupied by Amazon Books and Madewell remained unoccupied, and Faherty’s Pacific Palisades location—located between Chanel Fragrance & Beauty Boutique and MISA—closed on Saturday, October 15.
“The team decided to close the store as the brand was seeing tremendous growth with its locations in Venice and Malibu, and wanted to look at ways to service the greater Los Angeles area with new store offerings,” according to a representative.
Information about what tenant would move into the space was not available as the Palisadian-Post went to print Tuesday.
“Our Caruso properties continue to evolve with the latest retail and dining brands,” according to a representative, “and we look forward to announcing our newest tenant at Palisades Village very soon.”
