Parents helping frustrated children with math homework may be familiar with the refrain, “Why do I have to learn this? I’ll never use it.”
The Pacific Palisades Civic League meeting on July 27 showed exactly how math is applicable in the real world.
Questions over plans for a house on the 14000 block of Whitfield Avenue had Civic League members poring over plans and measurements to ensure that the proposed home meets with city guidelines.
Committee members had done their homework, reviewing slopes, heights, segments and formulas for landscaping and land use. The architects for the property on Whitfield will need to resubmit their plans based on recommendations by the committee.
The Civic League considered proposals on four other Palisades properties in various stages of planning and building.
Building and landscape plans for two houses on the 900 block of Fiske Street were approved.
Concerned residents asked questions about a house being built on the 1100 block of Chautauqua Boulevard that they say seems larger than permits allow.
Like so many other urban areas, the Palisades is grappling with how to meet the needs and desires of homeowners who want to maximize their space and increase home values while at the same time preserving the small-town feel of the community.
The Civic League serves as one part of this larger conversation.
