Roller Hockey Season Skating Along

Practices for the Palisades Recreation Center’s upcoming youth roller hockey season rolled on last Saturday at the new portable rink, installed on the facility’s outdoor basketball courts. Program director Ethan Rill and his assistant, Boris Voskoboynik, have announced that an all-star team comprised of 25 local players will compete in a tournament at the West Valley YMCA’an event sponsored by the Los Angeles Kings. Games began at the end of January and will continue every Friday evening from 4 to 8 through the end of March. Coordinators have adapted an Olympic theme this season. Over 75 kids are involved in the league, including four girls, with four teams in two different ages groups. The Junior Division consists mainly of 6- to 9-year-olds and the Senior Division consists primarily of 10 to 12-year-olds (USA, Canada, Russia and Sweden). The gold medal game is March 31. ‘Think Rink,’ the program’s fundraising committee, has already raised $50,000 for the new boards surrounding the rink and will hold a skate-a-thon over spring break to raise money for a bigger rink, a scoreboard, lights and a smoother surface. ‘Ultimately, we’d like to get high school and adult leagues going,’ Rill said. ‘That’s our long-term goal.’

There were times during last Friday night’s girls varsity basketball game when it appeared that Palisades High players had secretly switched jerseys with the opposition and it was really the Venice Gondoliers wearing the home white and doing most of the scoring. After all, Venice entered the PaliHi gym confident of victory, having easily vanquished seven consecutive opponents and fully expecting to clinch the Western League title. Yet, from the opening tip, it was Palisades which looked like the first-place team. The Dolphins outhustled, outrebounded and outshot Venice for 24 minutes, then withstood a furious fourth-quarter comeback to hand the Gondos their first league loss, 66-58, and move into a tie for second place with University. ‘This was a big win for us because they were undefeated coming in,’ said Pali junior forward Elane Roepke. ‘I’m so happy right now. It was a total team effort. I think the key was getting ahead early.’ Three and a half minutes ticked off the clock before the first basket was scored. It came on a fadeaway jumper in the lane by Palisades’ senior forward Megan Coulter and it gave the Dolphins a lead they would never relinquish. Several times this season, Pali head coach Ronda Crowley has watched her team squander big leads. This time, however, Pali kept its foot on the gas and steadily increased the lead throughout the first half. ‘We started off very sluggish on both ends of the floor and then, every time we made a run, they answered with one of their own,’ said Venice head coach Dominick Flores, whose team beat Pali, 47-41, in the first round of league play. ‘They used their height advantage to get a lot of offensive rebounds.’ Palisades led 10-2 five minutes into the game and 20-9 at the end of the first quarter, with Coulter scoring half of the Dolphins’ points, including back-to-back three-pointers. The margin continued to grow in the second quarter and by halftime Palisades (9-9 overall, 5-3 in league) had forged a seemingly insurmountable 39-22 lead. As the players exited the locker room at halftime, Crowley told her team not to let up and to ‘keep playing with intensity.’ The Dolphins did just that, opening the third quarter on a 10-3 run to take their biggest lead, 49-25. Guards Sarah Fukui and Silvia Cuellar distributed the ball expertly, driving the lane to draw double teams and passing to open teammates on the perimeter. Sophomore forward Tuekeha Huntley scored consecutive baskets and Coulter drained a three-pointer from the corner for a 51-34 Pali lead going into the fourth quarter. Aware that their winning streak was in serious jeopardy, the Gondos (17-6, 7-1) stepped up their game a notch and pulled to within 61-55 with 2:09 left on a three-pointer by guard Ivory Blockmon. But Pali forward Zedra Slaton outjumped two defenders to pull down a rebound off of Coulter’s missed free throw and her subsequent bank shot with just over a minute remaining sealed the Dolphins’ hardfought win. Coulter led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds, guard Jaega Haralambus added 11 points and Slaton had 10 points and eight rebounds for Pali, which hosted Fairfax on Wednesday and hosts Westchester Friday at 4 p.m. in the regular season finale. Huntley finished with eight points, Tawana Briggs had seven and Fukui had six points and six assists for the Dolphins. Blockmon led Venice with 13 points.

Paly Girls Swim Second, Boys Third at CCY Invite

The Palisades-Malibu YMCA swim team seems to be rounding into top form at just the right time. The girls placed second and the boys third during last weekend’s Crescenta Canada Invitational meet at the El Monte Aquatic Center, giving head coach Kameron Kennedy good reason for optimism. ‘This was the same venue where our championship meet will be held at the end of this month,’ Kennedy said. ‘I was very pleased with our results. Over half of our swimmers posted their best times. It is very rare to have this many best times at this part of the short course season. We are doing the most yardage ever and the kids continue to shave off seconds in each race.’ Paly’s girls got off to a fast start when its 11-and-12-year-old 200 Freestyle Relay team, consisting of Lila Lewenstein, Mara Silka, Georgia Johnson and Olivia Kirkpatrick, took first place. Paly’s 13-14 Freestyle Relay foursome of Alex Edel, Jennifer and Kimberly Tartavull and Allison Merz not only won but bettered its time by half a second. In the 13-and-over 200 Medley Relay, Paly’s Jessica Schem, Jennifer Tartavull, Edel and Merz won in 2:05.14. Mardell Ramirez took first place in the 25 Butterfly and was runner-up in the 50 Freestyle. Eleven-year-old Catherine Wang won the 100 Breaststroke in a stellar 1:22.57 and placed third in the 200 Individual Medley in 2:38.02. Wang also swam the third leg of Paly’s 200 Medley Relay, which took first place with a time of 2:19.40. Rachel Jaffe swam the first leg, followed by Kirkpatrick, Wang and Lewenstein. ‘All of the kids did and excellent job,’ Kennedy said. ‘They are coming to practice serious about their training and it is showing in the pool. I hope they realize how talented they all are and continue to go after everything in this life that they want. After all, anything is possible.’ The Paly boys squad was led by 14-year-old Ben Lewenstein, who achieved personal bests in every race he swam. ‘Ben is a very hard worker and deserves all the credit,’ Kennedy said. ‘I help construct the boat, but he’s gotta row it.’ Eight-year-old Kenny Saab placed eighth or better in all of his races. The 10-and-under 200 Freestyle Relay, consisting of Nick Edel, Alexander Landau, Nick Green and Tristan Marsh, took second place. Danny Fujinaka swam second in the 13-14 division of both the 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly. Hunter Loncar enjoyed an outstanding meet, finishing first at his level in the 6-and-under division in three events: the 25 Backstroke, 25 Butterfly and 50 Freestyle. ‘This was a great meet but Y champs will be the encore performance to this short course season,’ Kennedy said. ‘There will be a Paly swimmer in almost every final heat. The only reason we won’t be in a final heat would be because we don’t have enough depth in that particular age group.’ Palisades will compete in the annual Y Champs Meet at the same location February 25-26.

Lederman Is Double Trouble as Freshman for Yale Tennis

Palisadian Josh Lederman has made quite an impact as a freshman for the Yale University men’s tennis team. Competing in both singles and doubles, Lederman earned plenty of points for the Bulldogs at the Columbia Classic Tournament January 27-29. Lederman and Yale junior Brandon Wai defeated teams from Manhattan, St. John’s and Marist Colleges to reach the finals in doubles, where they lost 8-6 to the tournament’s top-seed and the third-ranked Division I team in the Northeast region. Lederman also reached the semifinals of the B-Flight in singles, beating players from Columbia University and Marist College. Proving he can compete on the national level, Lederman played well at the ITA Northeastern Tournament at Dartmouth in October, where he and Wai advanced to the semifinals, beating teams from Army, Boston University, Holy Cross and Cornell. The pair finished 2005 as the fifth-ranked doubles team in the Northeast. Lederman grew up honing his skills at the Palisades Tennis Center. While attending Village School he was among the top-ranked junior players in Southern California and excelled in doubles. He was diagnosed with a rare nerve disease called Guillain-Barr’ syndrome that kept him out of the sport for almost a year but went on to enjoy success at Harvard-Westlake High, where he was team captain as a senior.

Jack McArdle, Creative Homeowner

John (‘Jack”) Thomas McArdle, a 55-year former Palisadian, died on January 23. He was 89. He was a resident of Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he moved with his adoring wife Audrey in July 2005 to be near his only brother, Robert Barton McArdle. The two brothers had been exceedingly close and devoted to one another all of their long lives. Jack was a loyal, intensely devoted and loving husband to Audrey N. Smith for 60 years. They raised two sons, Barry of Winchester, Massachusetts, and Tommy of Irving, Texas, whose devotion to their father at a time of his ultimate need reflected his many years of selfless care of them. Both boys have followed their parents’ example in being married for over 25 years and each has three children. Born in Stratford, Ontario, Jack grew up in Stratford, Hollywood and Lakeland, Florida. He and Audrey met in Los Angeles and lived in Pacific Palisades for 55 years. Jack designed and built their family home overlooking the ocean with a breathtaking view from every room. He was incredibly creative and resourceful, always busy with a home improvement project or building furniture, often seen with paint brush or shovel in hand. His grandchildren were the grateful recipients of many of his creations, whether or not they understood what to do with them. He even crafted a cradle for the first grandchild out of wood leftover from Howard Hughes’s Spruce Goose. He tinkered with his beloved 1956 Thunderbird for 50 years and could be seen driving around the Palisades in it with his ever-present hat perched at a jaunty angle. Jack and Audrey played bridge often, enjoyed tennis for many years, being founding members of the Riviera Tennis Club, and were seasoned travelers. He became a Christian at age 88, and ended this life praying with his son. He asked for no funeral, but his family and friends remembered him at his brother Bob’s lake home with stories, tears and a few laughs. He was eulogized as a kind, thoughtful, always generous, selflessly devoted husband, father, brother and friend.

She is survived by sons Mazin Heiderson of East Lansing, Michigan, and Maan Abbass of Houston, Texas; daughters Magany Abbass-Thelen of Lafayette, Morouge Sevedra of Los Angeles, Methal Akins of Pacific Palisades, and Maysoon Sukkar of Arlington, Virginia; and six grandchildren: Layth Carlson, Yasmeen Catoline, Bassim Garrett, Natalie Prust, Ryan Majid Akins and Christine Heiderson. She was blessed with five beautiful great-grandchildren: Scheele and Taryn Prust, Kaden and Beck Carlson and Luca Khalil Catoline. Private services will be held at the Lafayette Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. Abbass Memorial Endowment Fund at Southern Illinois University, where Majid taught in the government department, and where he and Mimi lived for many years. Charles Grosh, a 57-Year Resident

Charles Grosh, a 57-year resident of Pacific Palisades, passed away at home on February 1 after a long battle with heart failure. Born in Hagerstown, Maryland, Charles was the oldest of three children. He met his future wife, Bess, in 1937 and they were married in 1940. They resided in Silver Spring, Maryland, until 1941, when they moved to Santa Monica. In 1948, they moved to Pacific Palisades. The family increased by two daughters and later moved to their current home on Chautauqua. Charles worked for the Bureau of Public Roads in Maryland, then joined the Federal Aviation Administration, where he worked for 37 years. He was an active member of the Palisades Methodist Church, serving on the finance committee, board of trustees and education commission. He truly enjoyed teaching Bible study and sharing his faith with others. He is survived by his daughters, Judy Grosh of Pacific Palisades and Leni Mortensen (husband Hal) of Fresno. Charles was cremated and his ashes will be joined with his wife’s, who predeceased him. The couple was married for 61 years. There will be no service. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Pacific Palisades Methodist Church, 801 Via de la Paz.

Cynthia Regan, 59; Former Palisadian

Cynthia Limarzi Regan, a former Pacific Palisades resident, died peacefully February 1 in Santa Barbara. She was 59. For the past 10 years, Cindy taught kindergarten at St. Raphael’s School in Santa Barbara and lived in Summerland. Previously, she lived in Malibu and Pacific Palisades. She taught first grade and was admissions director at Marymount Junior School for 10 years until 1993. She was a member of Corpus Christi parish and had many friends in the area. She is survived by her sons Brian (wife Karen) of Carpinteria and Kevin of Summerland, and a sister, Roberta Weinsheimer (husband Bill) of Winnetka, Illinois. Donations may be made in her honor to the St. Raphael’s School Scholarship Fund, 160 St. Joseph St., Santa Barbara, CA 93111. A funeral mass was held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Montecito and burial was at Carpinteria Cemetery.

Pictures of the Ancient World

In “Frida Maria,” the feisty, tomboyish Frida dances “just like a vaquero,” writes Lattimore, who used watercolor and colored pencil over modeling paste to create fresco-like images.

Like the readers of her books, many of Deborah Nourse Lattimore’s characters are children. With names like Merit, Frida, Two Flint and Kwan Yin, they come from diverse cultures and centuries long past. Some travel through dangerous lands and battle evil spirits in a quest for justice; others struggle to obey their elders while preserving their individual identities. These insightful young crusaders ask challenging questions and often have something to learn or teach about moral behavior, honesty and goodness. Lattimore, a Pacific Palisades resident who grew up in Beverly Hills in the 1950s, says she was always inventing stories as a child. Her imagination was fueled by frequent trips downtown to the old Los Angeles County Museum of Art with her grandmother, Leona Wilcox, who was a painter. They used to sketch together at the museum and at the Rose Garden in Exposition Park, remembers Lattimore, the youngest of three daughters raised by her grandmother. Growing up, ‘we all had diaries,’ she remembers. ‘Mine was about the Phoenicians.’ At the time, Lattimore says, there were few books on ancient history for children, so she looked at ones written for adults. The first picture book she owned was ‘The Egyptian Book of the Dead,’ a compilation of spells from different Egyptian dynasties which were said to help the deceased on the trip through the netherworld. In sixth grade, she began illustrating stories and won a local newspaper competition for her original story, ‘Egypt from the Camel’s Point of View.’ ‘When you feed a kid’s curiosity, you open doors,’ says Lattimore, who also used to play cello and sing. ‘The more art you see or music you hear that’s real, the more it’s a springboard to go off and do it yourself.’ Decades later, with a degree in art history and Egyptology from UCLA, she wrote and illustrated ‘The Winged Cat: A Tale of Ancient Egypt,’ designed in the style of the Egyptian Books of the Dead with hieroglyphics and pages painted to look like papyrus. Lattimore’s dozens of illustrated books combine many elements’mythology or history, art and fiction’and tell colorful stories with important messages for children. In ‘The Dragon’s Robe,’ a poor Chinese orphan named Kwan Yin (after the goddess of mercy) must weave an elaborate robe for the rain dragon in order to help an ill old man protect the land from evil. Through hard work, honor and persistence, she is able to complete the task. Lattimore’s intricate illustrations of ancient 13th-century Chinese landscapes seem to move and come alive on the pages. A brilliant rainbow-colored phoenix emerges from leaping flames, and the spirit of the rain dragon unleashes an ocean of rainwater that fills two pages with swirling color. Even the text boxes on each page are framed and adorned with imperial tassels, and some with partially woven images that evoke the work of Kwan Yin. This book earned Lattimore the 1991 PEN Center USA West Award in Children’s Literature. A similarly heroic tale is ‘The Fool and the Phoenix: A Tale of Old Japan,’ which is set during the Tokugawa dynasty’the greatest peace period in Japan’s history, dating from 1603 to 1868. Lattimore imagined what might happen if all was not peaceful and a small-town official became jealous of the shogun’s wealth. In an author’s note to this tale, she tells us that 20,000 works of art were produced during this period. Her own sweeping, detailed illustrations for the book cover every inch of the pages. ‘In poignant moments, the art has more diagonals,’ she points out. ‘It moves you across the page faster; it’s more emotional.’ Lattimore usually uses pen and watercolor for her illustrations, and prefers to paint on French d’Arches paper, a 90-lb. slick, hot-press paper because ‘you can work it hard and it’s forgiving.’ She learned a lot about the basics of art from her grandmother, who taught her how to look at color and draw perspective. ‘If you want a color to be really strong within itself, use three colors,’ Lattimore says, explaining that the sea could be blue, lavender and green, or three shades of blue. When she was 14, she got a scholarship to take college-level art classes at the Art Center College of Design, which used to be on Third Street and has since moved to Pasadena. The following year, she won the ACLU award for an original abstract oil painting about civil rights, a piece she later traded for a pair of gold-framed glasses. Some of her books are based on popular fairy tales or stories from her childhood. She created ‘Cinderhazel’ about a blond witch because she was frustrated with the perfect, obedient character of Cinderella. ‘As a little girl, I loved Cinderella but I wondered why she was so stupid,’ Lattimore says. ‘When the stepsisters leave the house, that’s when she should lock the door, because it’s her house!’ Asking questions, especially questions children would ask, is part of her artistic process. She and her grandmother used to ask all kinds of questions about the art they saw in the museum galleries. She remembers staring at an 18th-century painting of a woman in an extravagant dress, and her grandmother wondered what ‘marvelous undergarments’ the dame might have worn. Years later, Lattimore explored the use of undergarments around the globe and across history in ‘I Wonder What’s Under There?: A Brief History of Underwear.’ ‘You can see how an illustrator feels about a character by the way [he or she] has drawn the character’s undergarments’by the way they walk, the way their feet turn in or out,’ she says. Her interest in how people move physically when they’re dressed a certain way, inspired her to write a humorous story set in 18th-century France called ‘The Lady with the Ship on her Head.’ She captured the authentic furniture and big, ornate dresses of the time by studying art in museums, researching the period at the library and visiting MGM’s costume collection. She used acrylic paste to give the pages a canvas look as a backdrop for her elaborate illustrations. Lattimore has used modeling paste to duplicate limestone and to create fresco-like paintings. In ‘Frida Maria: A Story of the Old Southwest,’ set in 19th-century California, she used watercolor and colored pencil over the paste to authenticate her illustrations of the art and architecture from missions of the time. The rough lines and scratches add texture to the lively paintings, as if readers can feel the cool tiles or the dust rising under the horse’s hooves. Lattimore’s family had a keen interest in California history and lore, and she spent many afternoons at Olvera Street, where her mother performed as a flamenco dancer. Her grandmother told her stories about the ranchos of the Old Southwest, and she remembered one in particular about a famous horse race in 1842, when Jos’ Sepulveda (from Los Angeles) and Pio Pico (from San Diego) pitted their horses and towns against each other. That story inspired ‘Frida Maria.’ ‘I try to write stories that have some kind of threat involved,’ she says. ‘But I’ll never kill a kid or make fun of a kid in a story.’ Lattimore, who has traveled in Central America and Western and Eastern Europe, completed graduate work at UCLA in Near Eastern languages and pre-Columbian, Egyptian, and classical art history. She’s been teaching in the writer’s program at UCLA for about 18 years, as well as teaching art at Pasadena Art Center and four-part workshops on bookmaking with Every Picture Tells a Story. She’s currently working on a comprehensive picture book of ancient Egyptian mythology and a graphic novel for middle-school students called ‘The Attack of the Giant Liver.’ A mother to two grown children, Lattimore says she hopes her books will encourage kids to ask questions”even if they’re nosy and rude questions.’
